GM’s Super Cruise is a semi-autonomous driving aid that is available on certain Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks for the 2022 model year. The feature works with GPS to automatically detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path, controlling acceleration and braking to maintain a driver-selected following gap even in stop-and-go traffic. It is only available on select Super Cruise-enabled vehicles.
For the first time in Chevy Traverses history, Super Cruise will be available to equip most of trim levels, including the LT, Z71, and RS. By the end of 2025, it will be available on 750,000 miles of road in the US and Canada. The 2024 Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia now get Super Cruise, joining cars like the Chevy Tahoe, Blazer EV, Cadillac Escalade, and even the Cadillac CT5-V. The 2024 Equinox EV, which is expected to come out in the fall of 2023, will also have it.
Super Cruise is the first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads and is now being offered on more Chevy vehicles than ever before. As of summer 2023, Chevrolet offers Super Cruise as an optional feature on higher trim levels of the newest Silverado, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500 models. The 2024 Chevy Silverado and the 2023 Chevy Silverado have the Super Cruise feature availability.
Super Cruise is a Level 2 automated driving system that allows hands-free operation through a series of complicated technology. It is currently available for select 2022, 2023, and 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 models.

What is the difference between Chevy Super Cruise and Ultra Cruise?
GM never provided a date for Ultra Cruise’s rollout. The automaker’s already working on the soft points of expanded hands-free driving, launching a public awareness and dealership instruction campaign last July called “Hands Free, Eyes On,” trying to get vehicle owners to understand the limits of the tech. The closest we got for Ultra Cruise availability was GM saying the $340,000 Cadillac Celestiq would be the first product so equipped. Even with that, we were told Ultra Cruise wouldn’t be available at the electric sedan’s launch, instead being ladled into the Celestiq’s tech suite via OTA updates. As far as we can tell, the Celestiq is getting the same Super Cruise found in other GM products. Based on the Super Cruise’s current capabilities of more than 400,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada, and Ultra Cruise’s aim of more than two million miles — that include the hardest kind to drive, city miles — there could be a long road and a lot of updates to get from the former to the latter. And that makes sense — better to get it right.
Which Silverado comes with Super Cruise?
And on certain models—the 2021–present Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Yukon; and the 2022–present Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500—Super Cruise will even activate with a trailer in tow, all the way up to the specific vehicle’s load rating. Sensors in the brakes, accelerator, and suspension closely estimate the weight of the trailer and cargo on board, and the driver assistance suite compensates with appropriate following distances.
We should all be skeptical of new technology, especially that which promises hands-free driving with a trailer in tow. So I wanted to experience Super Cruise Trailering myself. Chevrolet set me up with a 22-foot enclosed trailer weighing about 3,500 pounds hitched to a loaded 2024 Silverado 1500 High Country, then put me on the legendarily traffic-snarled Interstate 105 near Los Angeles International Airport for 45 minutes. It would be an excellent real-world test consisting of freeway interchanges, stop-and-go traffic, and lane closures. TL;dr, the Silverado came through it without a single hiccup.
On The Road. Activating Super Cruise Trailering requires the same steps as any other version of the system. Once you’re on a stretch of road that’s been mapped with high-definition GPS and lidar, a gray steering wheel icon will appear on the instrument cluster. Press the Super Cruise button on the helm and that icon turns blue (along with a row of indicator LEDs on the wheel itself) while the system gets ready to take over. Once the icon and indicators turn green, the driver is free to remove their hands from the wheel and start cruising in a super sort of way.
What pickup trucks have super Cruise?
Super Cruise is available on the 2023 and 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali and Denali Ultimate, the most advanced and luxurious Sierra ever. With Super Cruise, drivers can travel hands-free on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s not just curves and travel speed that Super Cruise is capable of handling for the Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate.
Drivers can also let Super Cruise do the work of changing lanes when traveling on a compatible road.
For example, if the vehicle is traveling on a divided freeway at a set speed of 65–70 mph and is behind someone traveling 60 mph, the system’s Automatic Lane Change when enabled will look for an opening once the following gap is shortened. If a suitable opening is detected, Super Cruise will automatically initiate the turn signal andchange lanes without the driver doing anything other than paying attention to the road.
How much does it cost to add a super cruise?
There’s also the price. Adding Super Cruise to your Cadillac will cost you $2500 upfront, along with an active subscription to keep it working. The first three years are included with the purchase price, but after that, you’ll have to shell out $25 a month, according to Onstar’s website.
The 2022 Escalade Premium made for a fine test bed to see just how much Super Cruise has grown.
Super Cruise makes the monotonous boredom of highway driving just a bit more relaxing. Sure, you still have to pay attention. But you’re not constantly applying micro-movements to the car to stay in your lane or pass slower traffic. You’re just sitting there, chilling out, listening to your favorite podcast. It’s not a massive improvement, it’s just something that makes the ins and outs of everyday life slightly more bearable.
