Is Carnival cruise going to recover?

Demand for cruises is still hot. Carnival demonstrated an incredible recovery last year, as expected. Now it’s keeping up its solid performance as it fields high demand, with record revenue and improving profitability.

The 2024 fiscal first-quarter (ended Feb. 29) results surpassed expectations across several metrics. Revenue was a record $5.4 billion, 23% higher than last year. It had record first-quarter deposits of $7 billion, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net loss improved from $693 million last year to $214 million this year.

Management had previously said that it was coming into 2024 in its best booked position ever, and it’s already in a better position for 2025 than it was for 2024 at this time last year. It has limited inventory for the rest of the year, pushing out bookings from strong demand into a longer curve at higher ticket prices, setting itself up for a strong start to 2025.

Carnival is still experiencing high demand as a pushback from lockdown, and that’s not going to last forever. The current increased demand illustrates consumer confidence in Carnival as well as high overall interest in its product, indicating an enduring business model that can withstand short-term challenges and bounce back. Five years from now, demand is likely to be completely normalized, but still strong. In other words, it should be similar to its pre-pandemic performance.

Will Carnival Cruise Line rebound?

In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company’s overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line, which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period.

For investors seeking positive news about the underlying economy, CCL stock offers a compelling narrative. While Americans are struggling with inflation and elevated borrowing costs, the travel sector is enjoying sustained positive momentum.

While the acute sentiments tied to the “revenge travel” phenomenon have faded, this dynamic gave way to travel prioritization. Many consumers continue to put money into experiential expenditures, which bodes well for CCL stock.

MV Astoria is a ship that was constructed as the transatlantic ocean liner Stockholm for Swedish American Line, and rebuilt as a cruise ship in 1993. Ordered in 1944, and commenced service in 1948, at 76 years old, she is the oldest deep water passenger liner still around in a non retired status. As Stockholm, she was best known for an accidental collision with Andrea Doria in July 1956, resulting in the sinking of the latter ship and 46 fatalities off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, United States.

During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Stockholm, Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016. Astoria sailed with Cruise & Maritime Voyages until 2020 when the company suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been laid up since.

The ship was ordered in 1944, and launched 9 September 1946, as Stockholm by Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). The ship was designed by Swedish American Line designer, Eric Christiansson, who worked as the technical director at parent company Broström. She was the fourth ship named Stockholm for Swedish American Line, but the second of the four to actually sail under the name (See: MS Stockholm). When Stockholm III was sold to the Italians, the proceeds were initially left aside, but were later used to finance the construction of the ship after the 1941 Stockholm was sunk during the war.

Why are Carnival cruises so expensive right now?

Renewed importance of booking your cruise in advance. With the record demand Carnival is seeing, inventory is selling out further in advance, leaving guests with fewer cabin choices, higher prices, and fewer last-minute deals.

Not only does booking early help ensure you get the best rate, but you also have more time to save up for the cruise.

When you make your reservation, you only have to place a deposit, rather than pay the entire fare upfront. The final payment date varies based on the duration of your sailing. For cruises 5 nights or less, it’s 76 days before sailing. It increases to 91 days prior to sailing for cruises 6 nights or longer.
