What to wear in Olden, Norway?

Exploring the towns of Alesund, Olden & Hauguesund Unless you’re planning on doing a hike, or an excursion into the mountains, I found that a long-sleeved top, hoodie, leggings and and pumps were perfect. Sporty, athleisure wear is very common in Norway so don’t worry about being a fashionista.

Where do cruise ships dock in Olden, Norway?

Port Location and Facilities. The Olden Cruise Port is located 1km from the centre of the village where you will find a supermarket and other shops and amenities. However, the port has several facilities including tourist information, a small café and numerous souvenir shops. This port is all about the outdoors and from the port you can hire bikes, take a trolley train ride around the town, go out onto the fjord in a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) for an exhilarating and fast ride to take in the views, or you can hike the many trails to vantage points providing sweeping and expansive views.

What not to miss. The Jostedalsbreen National Park. Encompassing the largest glacier on the European mainland, the Jostedalsbreen, there is over 310 square miles of glacier surrounding Olden as part of the national park.

Briksdal Glacier. One of the many ‘tongues’ of the Jostedalsbreen, and the most touristic and easily accessible, Briksdal Glacier offers visitors a nice gentle 2.5km hike along a mountain trail, passing cascading waterfalls before arriving in front of the glacier and its glacial lake. If you don’t fancy the trail walk, specially designed ‘Troll Cars’ can transport you up and back to see the glacier. Plenty of facilities including a souvenir shop and café/restaurant can be found at the entrance of the trail to the glacier.

Can you walk to Olden from the cruise ship?

Olden has a deep water berth, but if the port is busy some ships may have to anchor off and use their tenders to the dock. There is no Cruise Terminal here, Ships Security set up a fenced area around the ship which you access with your cruise ID. There is no shuttle service to Olden village itself, which is 15 minutes walk inland from the dock, but there are shops, bars, a supermarket and various excursion offerings in the immediate port area. There isn’t an ATM at the port and we haven’t ever found one in the village so bring cash or a credit/ currency card – both are widely accepted. Similarly there is no car hire locally and no taxi rank although there are two local Taxi companies that you might want to contact in advance stryntaxi.no/ or Olden Taxis on +47 95086146.

The Tourist Information Office is in the main village but Olden Active acts as the Information Centre for cruisers. Here you can book excursions & arrange activities such as e-bikes, Kayaking, SU Paddle Boarding & rib rides. They have also some good walking maps and leaflets. As well as Olden Active (oldencruise.com/) there is kayak & bike hire and guided hikes available to book in advance from Discover Olden olden1.no/about/ – they are on the other side of the fjord but will collect you from the ship. A little tourist train and a ‘glacier sightseeing’ HOHO bus are based at the dock – more info on them below.

All of the main attractions in town that are within easy walking distance are listed here with the time from the ship at a gentle stroll. All excursions will be available to book onboard your ship, online independently or on the day if there’s space.

Is Olden, Norway walkable?

Hiking & Exploring On Foot. Pick up a free hiking map from the tourist information point and hit the road! You can follow the shoreline of the fjord, venture inland to visit Olden’s historic churches or hike up in to the mountains. If you stay near Olden village, chances are you will be able to see the cruise ship from wherever you are, so there isn’t a lot of fear of getting lost! Due to the geographic location, you should go prepared for four seasons in a day and wear your most comfortable shoes. Take plenty of water and snacks, but remember, Olden is in a remote location and there are no meaningful facilities dotted around.

Hop On Hop Off Bus Loop. If you have no excursions booked but want to see spectacular waterfalls and the wider area, then the Hop On Hop Off bus is great. It goes further than you could comfortably walk within an hour, but it’s not the longest route in the world. It does however give you time to take pictures at a couple of locations and see more than you might have by staying in the main village. You will pass the village centre, Olden’s two historic churches and get the general lay of the land, so to speak. It is by no means a replacement for a guided tour, so go into it with appropriate expectations. We did this as a way to cover more ground in the limited time we had left after our morning excursion. You can book this at the Tourist Information point immediately adjacent to the dock.

Pre-Bookable Excursions. Sea Kayaking. Don’t let the word ‘sea’ put you off – the water here at the end of the fjord is so still it’s like paddling on a lake. On our first visit to Olden, we booked through our cruise line and the excursion was in the morning, around an hour after arrival in to port. The guide meets you at the designated area and takes you to the boat store for a safety briefing before you get near the water. I kayaked occasionally as a child, but am by no means athletic or experienced, yet I felt fully able to take part in this slow paced group tour on the fjord. I would highly recommend it for a memorable and tranquil experience. You can book via your cruise line or a recommended shore excursion provider (prices vary), or you could book direct with ‘Olden Active’ for 740 NOK per person (approx. £61 GBP at the exchange rate). They are all operated by the same few people in the same small village, you would just be paying the cruise line a commission for arranging it for you.
