What Is Formal Attire On A Cruise Ship?

A cruise evening is a special occasion where passengers dress up in their best black-tie look, including suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, or evening gowns. The formal dress code for a cruise night typically includes tuxedos or suits and ties for men and evening gowns or cocktail dresses for women. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing, and it is at the ship’s discretion.

For formal evenings, women may wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits, while men may opt for tuxedos, dark suits, gowns, elegant pantsuits, or cocktail dresses. Smart-casual attire includes collared shirts, tailored pants or shorts, skirts, and dresses. Collared shirts, tailored pants or shorts, skirts, and dresses are suggested for evening wear. Layers and a light jacket or sweater are suggested for cooler nights.

For most cruise lines, a tuxedo or suit for men and an evening gown or cocktail dress for ladies is appropriate formal wear for a cruise. In practice, there are a variety of formal attire options available, such as tuxedos, dinner jackets or formal dark suits for men and evening or cocktail dresses for women.

For those who are not sure what to pack for a cruise, there are lists by cruise line to help you pack the right attire. For example, Princess Cruises still uses the formal night moniker, suggesting tuxedos or dark suits, gowns, elegant pantsuits, or cocktail dresses.

In summary, a cruise evening is a chance for passengers to put on their best and enjoy a more special evening out than just going to dinner in the dining room.

Do people still dress up for formal night cruise?

Alternative options to dressing up. Don’t let a dress code scare you off cruising, even if you’re traveling on a line that hosts formal nights. Most cruise lines have relaxed their policies enough so that most travelers will be able to attend a formal night with the clothes they keep in their closet at home—even if it’s a simple request for a collared shirt and a prohibition on jeans at dinner.

Really want to avoid the fancy dress? Remember there’s always the buffet, and room service—casual dressers always have the option to indulge in a night in and wear whatever they please.

Is it OK to wear jeans on a cruise?

Casual. To most of us Brits, casual means one thing and one thing only– jeans! The good news is that denim in the form of jeans, jackets, shorts and skirts is generally a perfectly acceptable daytime casual cruise look, often combined with a T-shirt but check before you go for lunch – those designer jeans may cut it for a promenade on deck but some lines don’t allow jeans in their restaurants, however expensive they might have been!

Fitness freaks can feel free to lounge around in lycra during the day, and of course, no cruise suitcase is packed until it contains at least two swimsuits and cover-ups. Bear in mind swimwear and flip flops are almost always a big no-no at mealtimes unless you’re having a relaxed poolside snack.

Casual can be harder to get right for an evening look as it’s all about looking as if you haven’t tried too hard, but in general, the rule is to ditch the denim and t-shirts in favour of casual shirts and trousers/smart shorts for men and laid back skirts, sundresses and ‘dressy’ tops for ladies.

What to wear on a formal night on a princess cruise?

Before opting for vacuum-sealed bags and travel-sized toothbrushes, cruisers may want to thoroughly research their cruise destination as well as the activities available on board. Princess offers a number of formal dining nights during which a dress code is observed. Think evening gowns, cocktail dresses, tuxedos, suits, or dinner jacket and slacks. A wrinkle-free fabric is highly recommended which will survive long hours stuffed in a suitcase. Passengers need not worry about having too few clothes, however, because each ship is outfitted with onboard laundry service. Passengers need not worry about having too few clothes, however, because each ship is outfitted with onboard laundry service.

While embarking on an Asian cruise, female passengers will want to avoid wearing shorts and skirts above their knees due to the conservative fashions worn by many Southeast Asian locals. Additionally, many Caribbean golf courses have a strict dress code, particularly in Bermuda, so travelers thinking of hitting a few rounds should come prepared with collared shirts and clean shorts. Many European nations do not have a stigma against casual fashion, but locals often sport chic clothes. Before leaving the cruise ship for a European shore excursion, Princess passengers may want to change out of their sweatpants and flip-flops.

Other than fashion concerns, vacation packers cannot forget to bring the essentials. Because cruise trips are usually at least one week long, passengers should bring extra camera batteries and memory cards as well as a power strip to charge several electronics at once. If falling asleep in moving modes of transportation is difficult, some Princess passengers may want to bring earplugs, eye masks and sleeping aides to make travel more enjoyable. Over-the-counter motion sickness pills are vital, and while on the upper decks, vacationers should have ginger snacks on-hand to soothe their stomachs.
