The Titanic, designed by Thomas Andrews, was the largest ship to ever enter service in 1912, carrying around 3,300 passengers and costing £7.5. Today, modern cruise ships have an average capacity of 3,077 cruisers and 1,203 crew members. The Symphony of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, with an average length of 325 meters. As of November 2023, Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship, but Icon of the Seas is set to surpass it when it launches.

Modern cruise ships are significantly larger than the Titanic, reaching lengths of over 1,000 feet compared to the Titanic’s 882 feet. Many Royal Caribbean cruise ships today have lengths greater than the Queen Mary, but they are only about 160 feet longer than the Queen Mary. The newest ships, Allure of the Seas and Titanic Compared to Cruise Ship, are considered mid-size vessels, holding 1,500 to 2,499 passengers.

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, spans 20 decks and is about five times the size of the Titanic. Modern cruise ships are on average 20% longer and twice as high, with the average Royal Caribbean cruise ship being 325 meters long. The Icon of the Seas is set to launch on 27 January, making it the world’s largest cruise ship.
