Does Princess Cruise Have Formal Nights?

Princess Cruises offers a range of formal nights, including black-tie optional balls, cocktail parties, and Broadway-style shows. The dress code is smart casual, but guests are expected to wear traditional attire such as tuxedos, suits, or dinner jackets. Ladies can opt for elegant cocktail dresses or evening gowns.

For formal nights, all Princess cruises of five days or more will have at least one formal night. For ladies, evening gowns and cocktail dresses are acceptable, while tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits are required for men. Private shipboard ceremonies are available for guests who want to honor their loved ones by resting their ashes at sea.

Formal night attire on all Princess ships runs from khaki slacks to tuxes, with options for slacks, polo shirts, dress shirts, and ties. Princess Cruises is smart casual, so guests should pack clothing that adheres to the dress code. On the informal side, both men and women may want to pack away.

A dress code is strictly enforced on most cruises, with every second night being a formal night. Formal attire includes evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or pantsuits for ladies, suits, combinations, or dinner jackets for gentlemen.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.

  • We’ve completed 61 Princess cruises so far and have more Princess cruises booked out to June 2025. The last time I even brought a sports jacket with me was 2017. Since then I do “Hawaiian Formal” on the formal evenings. My wife wears a nice top and slacks on the formal evenings. A couple of times I even wore a black t-shirt printed like a tux and black slacks and the dining staff was fine with that. On our 28 day cruise from LA to Tahiti, this past March, even the the dining staff wore Aloha shirts most nights.

  • I was on Crown Princess in July for ten day Alaska. To be honest on formal night I wore nice collard shirt and pants. I was fine. I was surprised by people who showed up in jeans. I thought nothing of folks wearing jeans and pullover shirt. I do think coming in shorts is a little much, but once again not me to comment. I am toying with a Cunard ten day next summer, I’m slightly dreading having to dress for dinner.

  • I had gone on 2 cruises, one in 1988 and one in 2008 and both had formal nights that were mandatory. I am glad that it is more relaxed now and gives you the option the way you want to dress. It makes it much better traveling with children. Unfortunately, we don’t go on any cruises anymore because of health issues.

  • I have over heard people talking about people who are dressed down in the dining room. Oh well, nice to know dressing down is official as of May 2023. I dress casual. BTW I contacted princess today because their information listed 24 hour room service included in standard fare. The definition of room service is the delivery of food, but princess said the delivery was not included in the service.
