Do You Have To Tip On Norwegian Cruise Lines?

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers a unique tipping policy that is not mandatory for all guests. Tipping amounts vary depending on the type of stateroom booked, with tips ranging from 20-25 per person, per day. However, NCL has raised their gratuity fees effective January 2023.

Cruise lines like Norwegian automatically add gratuities to passengers’ onboard accounts when disembarking for stateroom stewards. Tipping is not mandatory on a cruise ship, but gratuities distributed onboard modern cruise ships are more than mere bonuses. Tipping is not mandatory on a cruise, but it is important to consider that gratuities distributed onboard a modern cruise ship are much more than mere bonuses.

The currency of the ship is US Dollars, so tipping in dollars is recommended. Tipping individuals above the daily amount is fine, but removing gratuities doesn’t make things any easier for the passengers. UnCruise recommends paying 35 per person, per day in gratuities, but the payment is at the passengers’ discretion. Viking also charges gratuities to passengers, with gratuities being 13.50 per guest, per day for any category up to a certain level.

In general, tips are never mandatory on a cruise, but they are always welcomed especially in case of exceptional service. If you like the service and want to show your appreciation, consider using a Norwegian cruise tipping guide to help you show your appreciation.

  • I always tip above the daily gratuity for select servers I interact with on a daily basis. I usually frequent the same bars, I rent cabana’s that have dedicated servers. As for food service I tip for special requests and of course room Service. I’ve noticed that most passengers do not tip on a daily basis in the dining room. As for the Buffet, if I have anything made to order I tip the food preparer, I. E. Omelette. I always budget tipping cost into every cruise I take and will never have the auto gratuity removed.

  • I prepay gratuities and also give an additional tip to my steward. I do my time dining, so I rarely have the same wait staff in the dining room. If I do end up getting the same team, I often tip them at the end of the cruise. The one practice I don’t like is tipping the maitre d’. I’ve done it, but tipping management seems weird to me.
