Adventure On How To Remove Recalcitrant Sliding Yoke Bolts?

In this episode of Budget Build Garage, the first step in removing stubborn bolts is to lubricate the bolt with WD-40 and use vice-grip pliers or a long wrench to twist loose. Heat the bolt with a torch for 15 seconds to loosen it more if needed. For rust, apply rust-penetrating liquid thread loosener and strike the bolt 6-12 times with a hammer. Twist loose with a long-handled socket wrench.

In this episode, the U-Joint and slip yoke are separated, making it easier to remove them. Blunt impact/force is the first step when attempting to loosen stubborn bolts. There are five methods to remove a stripped, rounded, rusted, or broken bolt:

  1. Blunt: First, remove the front yoke by placing a socket between the yoke and the casing so that the yoke cannot rotate when turned the nut.

  2. Remove the U-Joint and the leaky slip yoke together. Start by removing the snap and replacing the u-joint. Spray Kroil or Liquid Wrench on the threaded side and wait about 15 minutes. Use your foot to hold the wrench on all the way.

  3. Remove the entire driveshaft from the vehicle by unbolting it from the yoke at the other end. Apply Kroil or Liquid Wrench to the threaded side and wait about 15 minutes.

  4. If stuck or rusted or plane old stubborn bolts are present, use a torch with a little bit of heat applied.

  5. Put on the emergency brake, remove the driveshaft, get a long breaker bar with the proper size socket, and remove the large nut in the center of the rear yoke.
