Who Keeps Watch Over The Pope While He Travels?

The logistics involved in protecting the president during his travels are complex and involve various security departments, including the Swiss Guard, the Personal and Close Protection sector, and the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). The Swiss Guard, also known as “the world’s smallest army”, serves as personal escorts to the Pope, including on his apostolic travels, and as watchmen for Vatican City and the pontifical villa of Castel Gandolfo.

The Secret Service often visits cities months ahead of time to secure the president’s safety. The Personal and Close Protection sector is comprised of Personal Protection Officers (PPOs), who are highly trained individuals who protect members of the royal family while they are in the U.K. The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) has a high-profile personal protective function, highlighted whenever the secretary of state travels overseas.

The Bible provides 25 encouraging Bible verses about travel and safe travel, encouraging travelers to trust in God’s protection and not be afraid or discouraged. The Pontifical Swiss Guard, an armed force and honor guard unit maintained by the Holy See, protects the Pope and the Apostolic Palace within the Vatican. The Swiss Guard, along with the Pontifical Gendarmerie, is responsible for safeguarding the Vatican and protecting the Pope.

Over 500 years, the Swiss Guard has been protecting the Pope, providing a mounted escort for him when he traveled in his carriage. Each year, the Vatican holds a ceremony to swear in new recruits, ensuring the safety and security of the Pope and his family.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
