Where To Put Transducer On Kayak?

The location of a kayak transducer is crucial for its effectiveness in fishing. The transducer should be in the water, with no obstructions blocking its view of the bottom. The hull shape of the kayak can also impact the placement of the transducer. Storage hatches inside the kayak can be good mounting spots, especially if drilling holes is not an option.

There are several ways to mount a transducer to your kayak, including in the hull, through scupper holes, on the side via an arm mount, in a built-in space under the kayak, or on the transom. The most popular places to mount a transducer in a kayak are through the hull, through the scupper holes, with an attached side-arm mount, and with a portable kit.

To power the transducer, connect a suitable 12v battery. The most common locations for a transducer to be mounted in a kayak are the hull, through the scupper hole, on the back near the rudder, or using a portable kit with a suction cup. Mount the transducer on a small plate near the back, ensuring it is slightly higher than the rudder or the base of the kayak.

In-hull transducers attach to the inside of the boat’s hull, and when considering a location, look for the area with the smoothest flow of water to achieve better sonar returns. Some kayak manufacturers have designated areas for transducer placement, so refer to the kayak owners manual.

In this video, the transducer is installed inside the hull using a custom transducer pad made from high-density foam filled with adhesive. The two most common ways of mounting a transducer are arm mounts and hull mounts, but choosing the best one depends on your specific needs. The transducer is responsible for pinging the sonar through the water column and picking up the return signal.
