What country is Wuhu in?

Wuhu, a city and river port in southeastern Anhui Sheng province, eastern China, has been a significant communication and strategic center since its establishment in the 2nd century BCE. The city is located at the junction of the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) with the Qingyi River, about 80 miles upstream from Nanjing in Jiangsu province. The Yangtze delta, eastward from Wuhu, consists of flatland, lakes, and canals.

Wuhu’s ancient settlement dates back to the 6th century BCE, when it was the site of Jiuzi in the state of Wu. The county seat of Wuhu was moved to Jimao Hill in the 3rd century CE, and the area continued to develop in the 8th and 9th centuries. In the mid-10th century, the county was reestablished on its former Jimao Hill site and spread westward along the Qingyi River to its confluence with the Yangtze.

Under the Ming dynasty, Wuhu developed into a major commercial center and river port, known for its rice trade. In 1876, it was opened to foreign trade due to the Chefoo (Yantai) Convention between China and the United Kingdom. Before World War II, Wuhu ranked third in domestic trade volume after Shanghai and Nanjing. However, its foreign trade was less than one-tenth of China’s total, mainly with Japan, which exported rice, tea, beans, oilseed, and iron ore.
