Where Do Cruise Ships Dump Human Waste?

Cruise ships are allowed to dump human waste in the ocean, provided the right conditions are met. However, many companies set their own regulations that their ships have to comply with. Cruise ships entertain thousands of passengers and are staffed by a substantial crew. With all those people aboard, a looming question remains: what happens with all the waste from cruise ships?

Cruise ships deal with black water, which is human waste from toilets, clinics, and critter pens. Under section 312 of the Clean Water Act, the EPA and USCG regulate cruise ship discharges, including sewage, solid waste, and ballast water. The U.S. allows cruise ships to dump treated waste into the ocean if they are within three and a half miles from shore. Beyond that point, there are no restrictions for dumping untreated, raw sewage in U.S. ocean waters.

Wastewater is run through an advanced wastewater-purification plant on the ship, which is above the US federal standard for purified water. It is quite legal to dump sewage and food waste into the sea, as U.S. law requires cruise ships to treat waste within about 3.5 miles of shore. Ships can dump treated sewage anywhere in the ocean except in Alaskan waters, where companies must comply with higher state standards. Most do not allow cruise ships to discharge waste anywhere near the nations shores, so all waste must be treated and delivered to local waste facilities.

U.S. law allows cruise ships to dump raw sewage in the ocean once a ship is more than three miles off U.S. shores. Ships can dump treated sewerage at sea, with some garbage stored and some dumped, such as food items being minced and dropped at least x miles offshore.

While modern trains won’t litter the tracks with human excrement, the traditional method did just that. This is what was known as a hopper toilet. Some of this rolling stock won’t be phased out of use until the end of 2023. This is why older trains feature notices within toilets that tell you not to use the toilet when the train is stopped at a station or standing at a red signal. In the USA, staff were instructed to lock toilets when the train was stopped in a station and unlock them when the train was again underway.

Mercifully, new trains no longer dump waste on the tracks. Instead, trains are fitted with chemical holding tanks. These are connected to regular toilets or vacuum toilets. Like aeroplanes, these need to be emptied regularly, leading to trains having to return to terminal stations. If the tanks aren’t emptied, they can reach full capacity and lead to toilets onboard backing up. If you’ve ever ridden a train in the UK, you’ll know that out of order toilets are a common sight and this may be the reason why.

What happens to human waste on a train?

Some trains may have composting toilet tanks, which use bacterial action to break down solid and liquid waste. Only the broken down clean liquid is released to the trackbed after sterilisation. The solid waste only has to be emptied every half year. This type of toilet is in use in some trains in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States.

Do planes drop toilet waste?

It is a common misconception that toilet waste from commercial aircraft falls out of the aircraft in flight; this is not the case. Modern airplane toilets are designed with a closed and sealed waste containment system to ensure that waste is securely stored until it can be properly emptied on the ground.

The waste from the toilets is stored in a holding tank within the aircraft. This tank is designed to be airtight and secure, and it remains sealed throughout the flight. When the aircraft lands, ground crew members at the airport use specialized equipment to safely and hygienically empty the waste from the holding tank. There have been extremely rare instances in the past where there were reports of “blue ice” falling from aircraft. Blue ice is a term used to describe frozen waste material that has leaked from an aircraft’s waste system. Whilst this is rarely a concern for people on the ground, it can impact on board systems. Ice that formed from a leaking lavatory sink led to a partial loss of aileron control on board Delta Air Lines flight DL211 in May 2023.

In reality, such occurrences are exceptionally rare. Airlines and aviation authorities take such incidents very seriously and investigate them thoroughly to prevent them from happening in the future.

Where does the toilet waste go on a cruise ship?

Two floors below the “hotel,” or passenger decks, sit the engines, air-conditioning compressors, and diesel-power generators, which engineers can adjust directly or remotely, from a control room. Certain ships display these controls on massive touchscreen tables.

Where do cruise ships dump food waste?

For solid foods that are harder to break down, such as bones, animal fats, and skin from fruits and vegetables, Carnival Corporation recently added dehydrators—there are more than 60 in the Carnival fleet of over 85 ships. The dehydrators use heat to remove excess water from leftover food, producing a mostly dry mass that looks like coffee grounds, which can be easily offloaded on shore. Carnival Corporation says the dehydrators can reduce the amount of food waste offloaded by up to 90 percent. While the odorless grounds are currently sent to landfills, there are plans to see if they might be repurposed by other companies, perhaps burned as a sustainable energy source or used as a fertilizer.

The results. With the food waste management technology and other measures, Carnival Corporation says it has accomplished a more than 40 percent reduction in food waste per person, relative to a 2019 baseline, and is already ahead of its 2025 goals. The company is targeting a 50 percent reduction per person, relative to the 2019 baseline, by 2030.
