Why is Jeju Island so famous?

Indeed, Jeju is officially recognised by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site, Global Geopark and Biosphere Reserve, encompassing Korea’s highest peak of Hallasan Mountain, the vast forested swathes of a semi-tropical national park, a wild coastline and the world’s longest underground lava tube.

The island is known for its unique cuisine, most notably the local seafood caught by Jeju’s famous female deep-sea divers (haenyeo), all of whom are aged 60 and over. Jeju’s beaches are perfectly suited for some coastal relaxation, its idyllic waters cloaking vivid seascapes of coral. Further inland, you will find narrow lanes lined with traditional cottages rendered from the native black lava rock, while fertile volcanic soils support palm trees, flourishing mandarin groves, pineapples and exotic dragon fruit.

After arriving in the island’s main urbane hub of Jeju City, Jeju’s southern coast is the most developed for tourism. But hire a car to venture to Jeju’s more remote areas, and you will find a land that appears untouched for decades. Watch the sunrise from volcanic craters, explore towering waterfalls and unwind in a natural paradise.

Where do ships dock in Shimizu?

Port InformationLocation9-25 Hinode-cho, Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka-shi, Shizuoka 424-0922BerthHinode #5ServicePassenger TerminalTourist informationPort managementShimizu Port Authority.

Sail into the Port of Shimizu and you will understand why it is considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful ports. The sight of Mount Fuji soaring above the surrounding area belies the fact that Shimizu is not only a scenic area, but a culturally significant one as well. In addition to Fuji, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the area also overlooks Miho-no-Matsubara, a pine tree grove included as one of the World Heritage’s constituent properties. These assets combine with the area’s moderate climate to mark the port as one of Japan’s prime sightseeing destinations.

Shimizu’s rich cultural heritage is rooted in the surrounding Shizuoka area’s history as the home of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo shogunate, following his retirement from government. A collection of historic buildings in the vicinity, such as Kunozan Toshogu Shrine (designated a National Treasure by the Japanese government), Sumpu Castle Park, and Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, depict a fascinating portrait of the life and accomplishments of this major historical figure. The Shizuoka area’s ancient culture is available not only for observation but for hands-on experience as well. At Sumpu Takumi-shuku, visitors can try their hand at making traditional Suruga handicrafts characteristic of the Shizuoka region, such as bamboo works, dyes, and lacquerware.

After a full day of absorbing the area’s many sights, there is no better way to recharge than with a healthy serving of fresh seafood. In addition to tuna, for which Shimizu has the number one haul in Japan, other local delights include sakura shrimp (a small, crunchy variety found only in the area) and young sardines called shirasu.

Is Shimizu worth visiting?

With a view of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, Shimizu Port is generally considered to be one of the three most beautiful ports in Japan, along with the ports of Kobe and Nagasaki. Located in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Chubu Region, this port has a long history. In the Edo period (1603-1868), it was one of the important “transit ports” for cargo ships sailing between Edo (today’s Tokyo) and the Osaka area. In the early 20th century, the port prospered through the export of tea to the foreign countries, including the United States. And now it has grown into one of the most important international trade ports in Japan.

The reason I write this post is mainly for the convenience of cruise ship passengers visiting Shimizu Port. Up until 2020 (prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic), the number ofinternational cruise shipsvisiting Shimizuhad been increasing year after year. And it seemed to me the number of inquiries comingmywaywas also gradually increasing. But now, there are not so many.

Here, hoping that things will return to the way they were, I would like togive you a brief introductionto the popular destinations in and around Shimizu and show you exactly whereeach stop islocatedin relation toShimizu Port. What happened at Jeju Island?

On April 3, 1948, on the Korean island of Jeju, communist guerrillas went on a rampage, killing police officers, election workers, and others; setting houses on fire; and terrorizing villagers, all to discourage them from voting in the upcoming May 10 elections that would establish the Republic of Korea (ROK).

The insurgency—referred to as Jeju 4.3—triggered a government counterinsurgency, forcing the communists into the mountains where they would continue their guerrilla operations for nine more years.

In March 2023, the Democratic Party of Korea (Deobureo Minju Party) introduced a bill mandating that citizens refer to the insurgency only as a “democracy struggle,” with punishments of up to five years in prison. But historical documents, eyewitness testimony, and statements from the perpetrators show that the incident was a campaign of irregular and unconventional warfare, a prelude to the communist military invasion of South Korea in June 1950, and part of the larger Korean War.

The communist party in Korea—initially named the Chosun Communist Party and later reorganized and renamed as NamNoDang or the Korean Workers’ Party-South (KWP-S)—was the largest party to emerge following Korea’s liberation from Japan. It was based in Seoul with branches all over Korea. Pak Hon-yong, known as the “Lenin of Chosun,” soon took over the party from its initial leader, Yo Un-hyong. Both Yo and Pak were long-time communists, trained in Moscow at the invitation of Vladimir Lenin. They envisioned a socialist Korea led by a communist party.

How many died on Jeju Island?

Just as the entire population of Gaza is being punished for the October 7 attack by Hamas militants, the entire population of Jeju was subjected to state terror after the April 3 uprising. The U.S. military government and the newly-formed Republic of Korea administered what was termed “collective punishment” on the entire island, a war crime prohibited by the Hague Regulations and the Fourth Geneva Convention. Between 1948 and 1954, an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 Jeju islanders were killed, or one-tenth of the population. Nearly every family on Jeju was impacted by the violence.

Over the past two months, over 18,000 Palestinians have been killed and close to 50,000 have been injured, with 7,780 missing. Every family in Gaza has been impacted by the violence. In Jeju, a third of the victims were elderly, women, or children. In Gaza, 70 percent of those killed have been women and children under the age of 18. At least 7,729 children have been killed.

In Jeju, scorched-earth campaigns destroyed 95 percent of mountain villages, and 80,000 to 90,000 villagers were forcibly relocated to internment camps along the coastline. Corey Scher of New York’s CUNY Graduate Center and Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University “found that almost 900,000 buildings across Gaza have suffered severe destruction and damage from Israeli bombardments, including places of worship, hospitals, schools, and residential buildings.” The UN estimates 80 to 90 percent of the population of Gaza is internally displaced. According to the UN World Food Programme, Palestinians who have been forced out of their homes are now stuck in overcrowded shelters, makeshift tents, and open areas without enough food, clean water, proper sewage or sanitation. More people may end up dying from diseases — bloody diarrhea, jaundice, measles, meningitis, chickenpox, viral hepatitis — than from bombs and missiles.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals, and we act accordingly.” Israel’s Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Arieh King said, “They are not human beings, and they are not animals, they are subhuman and that is how they should be treated.” Asian peoples, from Palestine in the west to Korea in the east, have often been subjected to dehumanizing stereotypes and slurs. In the U.S., derogatory terms like “yellow peril,” “gook,” “sand nigger,” “raghead,” “chink,” “Jap,” “Nip,” “slope,” and most recently “China virus,” have historically enabled acts of racist hate, both big and small, both foreign and domestic, ranging from the massacre of civilians in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq, to the brutal attacks on Asian Americans during the pandemic which gave rise to the #StopsAsianHate movement.

What is the difference between Jeju Island and Jeju-do?

In Korean, do is the phonetic transcription of two distinct hanja (Chinese characters) meaning “island” (島) and “province” (道). However, Jejudo generally refers to the island, while Jeju-do refers to the government administrative unit. The table below also includes the name of Jeju City, the provincial capital.

Jeju is represented by 3 constituencies in the National Assembly of South Korea: Jeju-gap, Jeju-eul (in Jeju City) and Seogwipo.

  • Provincial flower: Rhododendron (Rhododendron Weyrichii / Max (Chamkkot))
  • Provincial tree: Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora siebold / Noknamu)
  • Provincial bird: Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos quelpartensis)
