Where Did Iran Get Cruise Missiles?

Iran’s navy has added domestically produced cruise missiles to its arsenal, including Talaeieh and Nasir cruise missiles. The missiles have arrived at a naval base near the Indian Ocean in the southern Iranian port of Konarak, which is about 1,400 kilometers away. Iran continues to pursue longer-range land-attack cruise missiles, including through air-launch, but likely remains constrained by engine manufacturing limitations. The Iranian navy also added Deilaman, a 1,400-ton destroyer capable of launching cruise missiles, to its Caspian Sea fleet. Deilaman, 95 meters (312 feet) long, is capable of launching cruise missiles.

The addition of the high cruise missiles is likely to raise Western concerns. A top Revolutionary Guards commander said on Friday that Iran has developed a cruise missile with a range of 1,650 km (1,025 miles), raising Western concerns. The Iranian navy has amassed an arsenal of over 100,000 surface-to-surface missiles, with an increasing number of precision.

In its attack on Israel, Iran launched more than 300 killer drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles on Israeli territory. Only four of these missiles have arrived at a naval base near the Indian Ocean in the southern Iranian port of Konarak. Iran has long been known to possess the largest and most varied missile arsenal in the Middle East, but this was by far the largest test of its capabilities. The Paveh is an Iranian long-range surface-to-surface cruise missile with a range of 1,650 km (1,030 mi).

How many cruise missiles does Iran have?

Iran has one of the largest missile arsenals in the Middle East, with more than 3,000 ballistic missiles, according to an estimate released in 2022 by the U.S. Central Command. In the last decade, the country has significantly improved the precision of its missiles that have been considered a threat by the West for years. The Iranian weaponry is conventional. The country does not yet have nuclear weapons, but several of its missiles could carry a nuclear payload if Iran were to develop that type of weaponry.

According to the Arms Control Association, an American non-governmental organization based in Washington, cited by the Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel, Iranian missiles are largely based on North Korean and Russian designs, and perfected with Chinese technology. These missiles are mainly short and medium range.

In the last decade, Tehran has also become a major producer and exporter of drones. According to the U.S. Institute for Peace, Iran has manufactured thousands of advanced surveillance, reconnaissance and combat drones. What’s more, Iranian drones have become one of the greatest assets of the so-called Axis of Resistance (Iran, Hezbollah, the Houthis of Yemen and the pro-Iranian militias of Iraq and Syria) and Russia has frequently used them in its attacks against Ukraine.

How good are Iranian missiles?

Iran relies on short- and medium-range ballistic missiles for air strikes. The longer-range “Shahab-2” and “Shahab-3” missiles have a range of more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), according to the Arms Control Association (ACA).

“The Iranians have missiles with a very long range and very good precision. Not many countries in the world have that,” said Hinz.

“At the same time, of course, they have the problem that their military opponents, the US and Israel, are among the absolute world leaders when it comes to military technology,” he added.

Hinz believes that the US and Israel may have gained new insights into Tehran’s weapons arsenal as a result of the Iranian attack.

Where did the cruise missile come from?

In 1944, during World War II, Germany deployed the first operational cruise missiles. The V-1, often called a flying bomb, contained a gyroscope guidance system and was propelled by a simple pulsejet engine, the sound of which gave it the nickname of “buzz bomb” or “doodlebug”. Accuracy was sufficient only for use against very large targets (the general area of a city), while the range of 250km (160mi) was significantly lower than that of a bomber carrying the same payload. The main advantages were speed (although not sufficient to outperform contemporary propeller-driven interceptors) and expendability. The production cost of a V-1 was only a small fraction of that of a V-2 supersonic ballistic missile with a similar-sized warhead. Unlike the V-2, the initial deployments of the V-1 required stationary launch ramps which were susceptible to bombardment. Nazi Germany, in 1943, also developed the Mistel composite aircraft program, which can be seen as a rudimentary air-launched cruise missile, where a piloted fighter-type aircraft was mounted atop an unpiloted bomber-sized aircraft that was packed with explosives to be released while approaching the target. Bomber-launched variants of the V-1 saw limited operational service near the end of the war, with the pioneering V-1’s design reverse-engineered by the Americans as the Republic-Ford JB-2 cruise missile.

Immediately after the war, the United States Air Force had 21 different guided missile projects, including would-be cruise missiles. All but four were cancelled by 1948: the Air Materiel Command Banshee, the SM-62 Snark, the SM-64 Navaho, and the MGM-1 Matador. The Banshee design was similar to Operation Aphrodite; like Aphrodite, it failed, and was canceled in April 1949. Concurrently, the US Navy’s Operation Bumblebee, was conducted at Topsail Island, North Carolina, from c. 1 June 1946, to 28 July 1948. Bumblebee produced proof-of-concept technologies that influenced the US military’s other missile projects.

During the Cold War, both the United States and the Soviet Union experimented further with the concept, of deploying early cruise missiles from land, submarines, and aircraft. The main outcome of the United States Navy submarine missile project was the SSM-N-8 Regulus missile, based upon the V-1 but powered by an Allison J33 jet engine. The Regulus entered service but was phased out with the advent of submarine launched ballistic missiles that did not require the submarine to surface in order to launch the missile and guide it to its target.

Can Iran missiles reach the USA?

Iran has not yet tested an intercontinental-range missile capable of striking the United States. Major U.S. cities, such as New York and Washington, are 9,500-10,000 kilometers from Iran. But U.S. intelligence officials contend that Iran could quickly develop such missiles by acquiring Taepo Dong-2 technology from North Korea. They routinely note that “if Iran were to acquire complete (Taepo Dong-2) systems from North Korea, it could conduct a flight test within a year of delivery.” Yet, North Korea itself has not successfully tested the Taepo Dong-2, and its range is uncertain.

Initial reports in the late 1990s and early 2000s noted that the Taepo Dong-2 had a first stage derived from China’s CSS-2 and a second stage derived from the Nodong, giving it a range of 4,000-6,000 kilometers. Such a missile would not reach the continental United States from Iran, even with a third stage that adds 1,000-2,000 kilometers to its range. More recent reports suggest that North Korea may have developed an improved Taepo Dong-2C/Taepo Dong-3 missile with a more powerful propulsion system using UDMH fuel, which is superior to the kerosene-gasoline fuel used in the Taepo Dong-2. This missile reportedly has a first stage weighing more than 50 metric tons and a second stage weighing 15-20 metric tons.

U.S. officials have stated that the two-stage version of this Taepo Dong-2C/Taepo Dong-3 missile has a range of 10,000 kilometers and a three-stage version can fly 15,000 kilometers, enabling it to cover all of the United States. It is difficult, however, to verify the accuracy of the information in these reports. North Korea and Iran would only have confidence in the Taepo Dong-2 or an improved Taepo Dong-2C/Taepo Dong-3 after a few successful tests of the system.

In 2007, Iraq asked Iran to return some of the scores of Iraqi fighter planes that flew there ahead of the Persian Gulf War in 1991. And as of 2014, Iran was receptive to the demands and was working on refurbishing an unspecified number of jets. In late 2014, Iran returned some of the impounded Iraqi military aircraft to Iraq.

Iran currently has about 40 F-14 remaining with two of them having been upgraded to F-14AM around 20 Fully Mission Capable and the other 20 Partially Mission Capable(citation needed)

Where did Iran get its weapons?

From 1925 to the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Iran used to be equipped with the very latest Western hardware. Cases exist where Iran was supplied with equipment even before it was made standard in the countries that developed it (for example the US F-14 Tomcat, or the British Chieftain Tank). Primary suppliers included the United States, Britain, France, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), Italy, Israel, and the Soviet Union.

The Iran–Iraq War, and post revolutionary sanctions at the time had a dramatic effect on Iran’s inventory of western equipment. Under the pressures of war, all supplies were quickly exhausted and replacements became increasingly difficult to come by. The war eventually forced Iran to turn to the Soviet Union, North Korea, Brazil, and China to meet its short-term military requirements. Nevertheless, the experience of using quality equipment was not lost on any of the branches of the Iranian armed forces. Disappointed by the older Warsaw Pact equipment, Iran sought to develop its own ability to mirror the technology of its likely enemies, and to provide a totally reliable source of equipment for the future.

After the Iranian revolution, developments in military technology were carried out with the technical support of Russia, China, and North Korea; building upon the foundations established by western contractors. Iranian reliance on these countries has rapidly decreased over the last decade in most sectors as Iran sought to gain total independence; A major exception however, is the aerospace sector, where Iran is still dependent on external help. Iran has, at present, reverse engineered existing foreign hardware, adapted it to their own requirements and then mass-produced the finished product. Examples of this abound, such as the Boragh and the IAMI Azarakhsh. In an attempt to make its military industries more sustainable Iran has also sought to export its military products, see Iranian Military Exports.

The following list consists of some weapons systems that Iran manufactures domestically:

Which country has the fastest missile in the world?

These missiles, designed for speed, precision, and range, represent cutting-edge innovations in the field of defense. Among them, the Avangard, DF-41, Trident 2, Minuteman 3, and RS-28 Sarmat stand out as the fastest and most formidable.

Why Speed Matters for Missiles?. Speed is a critical factor for missiles due to several key reasons. Firstly, high speeds enhance a missile’s ability to evade enemy defenses, making interception extremely challenging. The faster a missile travels, the less time an adversary has to react, increasing the likelihood of successful target penetration.

Additionally, high speeds contribute to the missile’s range and responsiveness, allowing for rapid deployment and engagement.

The List of the 5 Fastest Missiles in the World. The following are the 5 fastest missiles in the world:

1. Avangard: Revolutionizing Hypersonic Technology. The Avangard missile, developed by Russia, has earned its reputation as a game-changer in hypersonic technology. With its incredible speed and agility, the Avangard is capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 27, or 32,200 kilometers per hour. What sets it apart is its ability to perform rapid maneuvers, making interception nearly impossible. The Avangard’s unparalleled precision and range make it a formidable force on the battlefield.

  • Origin: Russia
  • Class: Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV)
  • Range: 6000km
  • Warhead: Nuclear 2MT option
  • Status: In service

2. DF-41: China’s Swift Strategic Deterrent. China’s Dongfeng-41 (DF-41) is a ballistic missile that has captured the attention of military analysts worldwide. With a reported top speed of Mach 25, or approximately 30,600 kilometers per hour, the DF-41 is among the fastest missiles in China’s arsenal. Its impressive range and ability to carry multiple warheads make it a formidable strategic deterrent.

Who has a stronger military, Iran or Israel?

Even so, Israel maintains military supremacy. Besides Israel’s operational and intelligence advantage over Iran, it also has a nuclear deterrent, experts said. Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, with the Washington-based Nuclear Threat Initiative estimating that Israel has around 90 nuclear warheads.

Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of the designated Palestinian terrorist group Hamas who was killed in Tehran on July 31, was a controversial figure whose death could escalate tensions in the Middle East and derail negotiations to end Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.

Haniyeh was the political chief of Hamas, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. Based in Qatar, he had played a key role in internationally brokered talks on reaching a cease-fire in Gaza.

A U.S.-designated terrorist, Haniyeh was considered a relative moderate within the organization.

Where does Iran get its missiles from?

Iran acquired Soviet-made Scud-Bs, first from Libya, then from Syria and North Korea. It used these 300 km (185 miles) range missiles against Iraq from 1985 until the war ended in 1988. Since the war, Tehran has steadily expanded its missile arsenal.

  • Michael Elleman*. Iran has the largest and most diverse ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East. (Israel has more capable ballistic missiles, but fewer in number and type.) Most were acquired from foreign sources, notably North Korea. The Islamic Republic is the only country to develop a 2,000-km missile without first having a nuclear weapons capability.
  • Iran is still dependent on foreign suppliers for some key ingredients, components and equipment, but it has the technical and industrial capacity to develop long-range missiles, including an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, or ICBM.
  • The military utility of Iran’s liquid-fuel ballistic missiles is limited because of poor accuracy, so these missiles are not likely to be decisive if armed with conventional, chemical or biological warheads. But Tehran could use its missiles as a political or psychological weapon to terrorize an adversary’s cities and pressure its government.
  • Iran’s indigenous Fateh-110 family of solid-fuel missiles have achieved the precision necessary to destroy military and critical-infrastructure targets reliably, as demonstrated during its January 2020 attack against U.S. forces stationed at Ayn al Asad airbase in Iraq using Zolfaghar missiles.
  • Iran’s space program, which includes the successful launch of several small, crude satellites into low earth orbit using the Safir and Qased carrier rockets, proves the country’s growing ambitions and technical prowess. After several failed launches between 2016 and 2022, the larger, more powerful Simorgh successfully placed three satellites into orbit in early 2024.

Overview. Iran’s pursuit of ballistic missiles pre-dates the Islamic revolution. Ironically, the shah teamed with Israel to develop a short-range system after Washington denied his request for Lance missiles. Known as Project Flower, Iran provided the funds and Israel the technology. The monarchy also pursued nuclear technologies, suggesting an interest in a delivery system for nuclear weapons. Both programs collapsed after the revolution.

Under the shah, Iran had the largest air force in the Gulf, including more than 400 combat aircraft. But Iran’s deep-strike capability degraded rapidly after the break in ties with the West limited access to spare parts, maintenance, pilot training and advanced armaments. So Tehran turned to missiles to deal with an immediate war-time need after Iraq’s 1980 invasion. Iran acquired Soviet-made Scud-Bs, first from Libya, then from Syria and North Korea. It used these 300 km (185 miles) range missiles against Iraq from 1985 until the war ended in 1988.

  • Firstly, they did not stop it. The two airbases, the secret service building in Tel Aviv and the radar station in the (occupied) Golan heights – all of which did the consulate strike in Syria, were hit – by the top tier missiles – which are mid-tier missiles in the Iranian arsenal. Proof of concept success. (BTW, 5+ countries tried to ‘stop’ it and failed – this says even less about Israel’s missile defense system. We are not fools.

  • Iran did an ethical warning. Proving its possible to: 1. Gather a scope of arsenal and capacity of the iron dome 2. Having had flustered the system with slow drones in order for the one type of missile not mentioned above to make its accurate targets. Namely the ballistic missiles 3. Proving they have the mercy and capability not to harm innocent lives while targeting military bases precisely Remember, this was just a warning. An introduction

  • Completely wrong. Iran was well aware what confronted it was one of the most sophisticated layered air defence networks in the world. And yet it still managed to achieve hits via it’s ballistic missiles. Go take a look at some of the articles out there, the reentry vehicles were making evasive manoeuvres less than a second before hitting the ground. There was also a lot of warning in advance which gave them time to prepared. If this escalates further, oil goes >$150, that’s going to affect the global economy.

  • There were supposed to be NO casualties and minimal damage..Iran now knows exactly how all 3 defence systems work practically and demonstrated that they can breach it with their oldest and less developed weapons…..They also demonstrated that it costs Israel financially 10X to defend these attacks versus how much it costs Iran to launch them…makes sense why they were celebrating…Israel should be very worried….very smart move by iran…Also Israel needed help to defend this attack from UK / US / Jordan etc. and couldn’t do it on it’s own

  • Each time Israel knocked one of the 30 Iranian missiles, it cost about 30 million dollars. There were 30 ballistic missiles, thats almost 1 billion dollars. Then for the 130 drones, maybe a million dollars to blow up each one of those. Add in the rest and we are already talking about over 1 billion US dollars. Iran targets were military and the one base they wanted to hit, they did. This was not an all out attach by Iran – this was a very, very expensive warning.

  • A bullshit analysis ever on a news website. “Did Iran under estimate Israel or failure”? Even a reporter from burundi or papua new guinea will never ask that type of question. Iran notice Israel days before it attacks, used old type missiles, all of the drones and most of the missiles where NOT down by Israel. And then your asking the stupidest and funniest question by a ‘professional reporter’.

  • Israel can handle its own when fighting children, women, doctors, journalists, and aid workers. But when it goes up against Iran, it needs three foreign-funded air defense systems, three other countries to send in their own fighter pilots, two of another country’s warships, and another country’s air defense system. Even with all that, missiles still got through and hit Israeli military bases. Embarrassing.

  • It didn’t: Most drones had fireworks in them and self-detonated in the air or hit fields, the goal was to put on a rather boring show. The 99% success rate thing is an absolute joke: People don’t realize how hard it is to hit a tiny object in the air going at hundreds of kilometers an hour. Sure, the most advanced anti-aircraft / anti-missile technology can probably get close to a half success rate with precise predictions and some realtime trajectory adjustments, but never as close as that at such heights and speeds.

  • Iran intentionally sent those so their other missiles which are faster the the speed of sound x5 can hit the airbase which the F-35 took off from to strike the embassy. It’s also good to note that the airbase is the most guarded place on earth (even more than the White House). Iran successfully hit the airbase and theirs plenty of footage people can find on YouTube. I have no idea why any respected TV would not report this fact. Also, the drones sent was in coordination with USA and Iran announced the moment they left Iran and their purpose was to map out the Israeli are defences and eventually be taken out. You’re making this as a success but it was indeed a big failure on Israel’s part.

  • Striking the targets would be the bonus, as far as I’d expect. Missile defence, as briefly touched on is really expensive. I’d like to see an estimate from those in the know about the expected costs per side would be. I suspect this was far more expensive for Israel (and others combined) than Iran. It’s also a demonstration of capabilities. I wonder if the targetted air base was the source of the F35 that struck the consulate.

  • Iran knows that if they launch missiles it will definitely shoot down Israel’s Iron Dome. But what if, this attack, they were only for collecting data on which locations the missile escaped from the iron dome’s reach and how much the percentage of iron dome failures. So then armed with that data they can attack more effectively

  • All the politicians have shown how the really feel about all the veterans that bleed 🩸 for this country. If you come here illegally, then the politicians will cry for them while giving free housing, food, and phones. But if you’re a veteran that’s on the streets having mental health struggles from all the previous wars these politicians sent us to then you’re just garbage to them. Its disgusting and a slap in the face. I had over 30 surgeries and over 40 wounds from a IED on my fourth tour, but they do anything to cut any cost on helping wounded soldiers like myself. They deserve free housing, health care, and phones for what? But myself who lost a eye and almost my life for my country have to beg for scraps from these clowns. I am a conservative but not a Republican. I won’t vote for any politician in either party that supports any wars unless its actually protecting us at home if attacked. That’s why i will vote for trump. He’s far from perfect but he’s the only president not to get us involved in any new conflicts. I am tired of wars that are all driven to protect financial interest of billionaires. I don’t want us fighting in, or funding them anymore.

  • I’m not Iranian. But unlike Israel, Iran is a peaceful country. Whenever a country needed help, Iran rushed to help it. For example, ISIS appeared, Iran went to help Iraq and Syria. He saved Yemen from Saudi Arabia. He saved Russia from NATO and America. Palestine and Lebanon from the hands of Israel. Bosnia from Serbia. Armenia lost from Azerbaijan. Türkiye and Erdogan from the coup plotters. Iran is a kind country. Friendship is reliable.

  • Sure Israel should take the “win” and stand down. America is right! Israel is playing with fire right now. Any military analyst looking at what happened with regard to Iranian strike on Israel would be concerned for Israel. IN spite of the spectacular success rate, the war was fought over Israeli skies. A vast majority of Iranian hostilities made it to Israeli air space. Not good by any means especially that you were informed of the impending attack and was allowed to get into defensive positions.

  • Iran is also resilient to Peace that is why, respect others politics is not their priority so far what is there left for our world to do but watch nukes flying by? Ukraine we can do much for them to suppress war fronts of Russia invasion to their regions where Russia’s unbalanced political governm’t don’t had the rights to get Ukraine,Ukraine was been isolated in past because Russia rise of Stalin while Ukraine preferably stumble to Int’l. russia political propaganda until their fate with Russia executes war into Ukraine

  • If Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome, Sling of David etc were so mighty, why was the US, UK and Jordan air force required? The truth is that Iran has made a fool of Israel. Iran clearly wanted to fire a salvo and didn’t want to inflict loss of human life – they gave the allied and regional forces plenty of notice plus used low cost weaponry that was expected to be intercepted. Iran clearly planned to exhaust some of the Iron Dome capabilities (which a are horrifically expensive) and gather intelligence in the process without killing civilians. If you think about it, Iran spent a couple of tens of US$ Millions all in all but the the cost for the US and UK was an estimated total of $4Billion! – At least $3Billion bill for the US/UK plus the cost for activating anti-cruise missile weaponry from Israel was in the tune of hundreds of $Millions Thee “little favour” the US and UK air force did Israel by stepping in neutralising the rest cost them US$3 Billion: for each $10K missile $1M was spent . I would say this was a spectacular and resounding success for Iran. For now, Israel has been spared, but even the US told them “Take the win”. Why? Because they could not keep supporting other attacks on Israel at this price, even if we exclude a spill out to Russia and other actors. Now, who is the fool?

  • The object shown at 1:14 is not a missile it is the second stage of a 2 stage missile that is dropped when its fuel is finished. If you look carefully you will see that the object has no warhead. It looks like a cylinder. If it was a missile it would create a big hole (several meters deep} when hit the ground because Iranian missiles have at least a 500kg warhead. Haven’t you seen the craters that Iranian missiles made in the US Base in Iraq? 5 meters deep!

  • Inshort, there was 3 or 4 countries tht help lsrael to intercept missiles and drones of lran, not lsrael alone, To add on that some missiles hit on target, these 4 countries failed to intercept all .
