Hurricane Kayaks, a well-known brand in the industry, is known for its innovative approach to kayak design and construction. They are made in North Carolina using Trylon ABS thermoform plastic, as opposed to traditional polythene plastic. This results in lighter kayaks that weigh 10-15 lbs. less than those made in North Carolina.
Hurricane Kayaks is owned and managed by people who love the great outdoors and see no reason why heavy burdens should be carried. They work closely with craftsmen and suppliers all over the country, and their ABS plastic is extruded in the United States. The company produces recreational kayaks, such as the Santee Series, Sit-on-top kayaks, Skimmers, and Sojourn Day Touring Kayaks, all featuring injected-molded plastic components sourced from US companies.
Hurricane Kayaks are assembled in Warsaw, NC, about an hour from the NC coast. They use hand-sewn covers made by their sister company in western NC. If you stick to flatwater (NO whitewater), your Hurricane should be as durable as a roto-molded polyethylene kayak. Trylon ABS plastic is not as impact resistant.
Hurricane Kayaks is a local kayak brand that has been making lightweight, thermoformed kayaks for almost two decades. They manufacture a complete line of recreational, day touring kayaks, and they are on par with Eddyline, both manufactured using thermoformed ABS. Hurricane Kayaks is proud to be a Made in the USA company and continues to provide a unique and comfortable experience for kayak enthusiasts.

Why are Hobie kayaks so good?
Hobie Kayaks are top-notch because of their innovative MirageDrive pedal system. This system lets you pedal with your feet, leaving your hands free for fishing. They’re built tough with quality materials and have lots of features that make fishing easier, like built-in rod holders and plenty of storage space. If fishing isn’t necessarily your cup of tea, the extra storage provided is great for avid kayakers who enjoy longer cruises on the water. You can take a bunch of handy supplies with you and store them in your boat!
Stability is key when fishing, and the Hobie Pro Angler series is known for being super stable. These kayaks have a wide hull, which means they’re steady even in rough waters. They also come with features like adjustable seats and non-slip decks, so you can feel secure while you’re out on the water.
Pedaling a Hobie kayak is super easy, thanks to the MirageDrive system. Using your legs to pedal is less tiring than using your arms to paddle, so you can go further without getting as tired. The system is smooth and efficient, and you can adjust it to make pedaling as easy as you want, and you can even throw it in reverse!
Is a longer kayak more stable than a shorter one?
The length and width of a kayak are important factors to consider when choosing the right size. As discussed earlier, longer kayaks are generally faster and more stable, while shorter kayaks are more maneuverable. Similarly, wider kayaks are generally more stable, while narrower kayaks are faster and easier to paddle.
Again, when considering the length and width of a kayak, it’s important to think about the type of kayaking you plan to do.
If you’re looking for a kayak that can handle rough waters or fast currents, you may want to choose a longer and wider kayak for added stability. If you’re more interested in touring or exploring calm waters, a shorter and narrower kayak may be more suitable as this will prove much more efficient and less strenuous for longer periods.
Why do kayaks crack?
Although it is unlikely that your kayak will need repair during its lifetime, it is possible that a hull crack or puncture might occur due to extreme impact or contact with a sharp object. If this happens, first contact usor your Wave Sport dealer to determine if the damage falls under the boat’s warranty.
We will need the serial number of your kayak (find your serial number), a good description of the damage (a photograph is very helpful), and a description of the incident during which the damage occurred. All this information will help us to determine the best course of action in getting you back on the water. As an owner of a boat made from polyethylene plastic, one repair option which may be available to you is welding.
Polyethylene is recyclable and repairable, unlike many other plastics. Incidents necessitating welding happen to less than one percent of boats, but if for some reason you should get a crack or hole in your boat, refer to the following repair instructions or call us for additional assistance.

What is the lifespan of a kayak?
Bottom line: 6-12 years is a pretty typical range for the life span of a kayak. That’s a huge range, you might say. And yes, that is true. An inflatable kayak might last you only a half dozen years; however, a well-maintained, quality kayak can last twice that or much longer – even a lifetime.
There are a number of things to consider, however, when judging how long you can keep paddling. The type/quality of material, level of maintenance, and frequency of use can all impact the lifespan of your kayak.
Kayaks are made from a number of different types of materials that have their pros and cons – heavy and durable to light weight and short-lived. Let’s look at some of the more common materials.
How do you repair a crack in a Hurricane kayak?
How hard is it to repair Trylon?. There are many excellent patch options on the market today. We recommend you consider two patch options for cracks under 12 inches long – thermoform patches by Patch N’ Repair and fiberglass patches by Gator Guard, as both companies sell quality products that bond well with ABS Trylon plastic. You can also use fiberglass cloth with a two-part epoxy for more complex repairs. Just email [email protected] for instructions, and always remember to drill out the terminal ends of any cracks before patching.
Are there cockpit covers or spray skirts for your kayaks?. Many certified Hurricane dealers offer a full range of spray skirts and cockpit covers from various brands that will work well on your Hurricane model. If you are unsure of the cockpit size of your boat, check the specifications for your kayak on our website or email [email protected] for more information.
I love the wonderful shine my Hurricane has and want to maintain it. What should I do?. That shine is due to an acrylic cap on the exterior of your boat, and the plastic will usually wipe clean with a light solution of streak free dish soap and water. For deeper cleaning, try Novus Polish with a soft cloth on the exterior of the boat. Don’t use solvent-based cleaners like acetone, as they will soften Trylon and dull the acrylic finish. Denatured alcohol can be used to remove scuff marks, and we recommend 303 Aerospace Protectant to protect your deck, hull, hatch covers, and the interior of sit-insides from UV rays. Use a cockpit cover to protect seat fabrics and the interior of sit-insides from UV rays and full covers if you store your boat outside.

Can you repair a cracked kayak?
Using plastic welding is the best way that I’ve found to repair a hole or crack in your kayak.
The kits are pretty cheap and you likely have the correct type of plastic lying around your house somewhere.
I used this process to fix my kayak and I was very happy with the outcome.

Are Hurricane kayaks durable?
How do Hurricane kayaks hold up compared to roto-molded? As long as you stick to flatwater (NO whitewater) your Hurricane will be as durable as a roto-molded kayak. Trylon ABS plastic is not as impact resistant as polyethylene, but is more abrasion resistant, resists fading in sunlight, and (best of all) won’t oil can on your car rack and warp like polyethylene boats can.
How hard is it to repair Trylon? It’s not hard at all! There are many plastic welding adhesives that bond with Trylon for spot repairs, but we recommend the Devcon brand of waterproof bonds. You can use them around bulkheads and cockpit coamings in lieu of caulking or use the adhesive with pieces of ABS plastic for structural repairs. Always remember to drill out the terminal ends of any cracks before patching.

Do kayaks flip a lot?
Conditions that Cause a Kayak to Tip. Generally, kayaks are safe and don’t just tip over for no reason. Most of the time when someone experiences this, it’s due to a lack of balance or conditions on the water outside of their control.
For example, it’s rather difficult, even for a beginner, to tip over in a recreation kayak on a calm river. A sporting kayak going up against strong rapids or out on a choppy ocean runs a greater risk of tipping, regardless of skill level, because it takes more skill to navigate those conditions. It can also be more difficult to control your boat if it’s super windy out, as those winds affect the water significantly.
Aside from weather conditions, if you’re new to kayaking there is a learning curve in navigating how to balance and paddle on the water. If you’re in shallower water with a larger boat, you could run up against the river bed, and that stalling tends to throw newer boaters off balance. Without the experience on how to paddle out of getting stuck, especially if the current picks up a bit, one naturally runs the risk of tipping over.
Seasoned kayakers who are taking their first stabs at angling can also run into an issue with tipping. Having to multitask and focus on the mechanics of kayaking and fishing at once is a very different experience, and it throws some off. Especially if a bite is taking considerable effort to reel in, and one hasn’t anchored correctly, that angler could easily tip over, even in deeper water.
What are high end kayaks made of?
Kevlar is used for top end kayak construction. It is the strongest construction material of the three listed here. It is more brittle then polyethylene and carbon fiber but, because of this, it flexes far less making it more efficient in flat water. More costly than Polyethylene and GRP.
To answer this you really need to ask yourself a few questions:
- How much money am I willing to spend?
- Where am I going to use the Kayak?
- What type of paddling will I be doing?
- Will I have someone to help me mount the kayak on my vehicle?
There are a few types of materials available to the kayak manufacturer. They will select the right type of material based on what they will market the kayak for. For instance if they are going to market the kayak for touring, sea expeditions, or playing in the sea (away from rocks and ledges) they will likely select a composite or linear polyethylene construction and some may opt for a cross molecular chain polymer or a thermoform hull. All have various costs, pros and cons depending on where and when you plan on using them.
