Despite 30 states having legalized some form of cannabis, flying with edibles in the U.S. can be tricky due to airlines following federal laws instead of state ones. In 2024, LAX Airport allowed travelers to bring cannabis on domestic flights, but this is still a no-go. To ensure safety, it is best to secure your stash at airports and customs procedures.
International travel is different from domestic travel, as marijuana is not allowed to be transported to other countries per federal law. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) states that the only cannabis products with more than 0.3 percent THC are considered on airplanes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also conducts THC and CBD tests on pilots as they do not approve of products not approved by the FDA.
If you think you can forgo flying and transport weed by car, international travel is against the law and could result in serious legal consequences. It is essential to abide by the rules and regulations of the country you are traveling to.
Edibles or CBD products with more than 0.3 percent THC are technically illegal to bring on an aircraft. Even if your weed gummies are legal in your state, they are technically illegal to bring on a plane. However, if your edibles or CBD products meet these requirements, you can fly with them. These rules apply regardless of the airport, and it is legal to have and take cannabis anywhere in the airport except when you’re flying to the US.
Travel Canada allows you to travel between Canadian destinations with cannabis in your possession, either in carry-on or checked baggage. However, marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some CBD oil, remain illegal under federal law.

When I went through TSA on my way out of California and back to Texas I packed my edibles and my mom’s into my carry on. The bag got flagged for too much liquid bc I forgot the 3.4oz rule when packing it so a TSA agent went through the entire bag and pulled everything out he saw that my mom’s edibles were in a pharmacy print bag so he stuck them back into the carry on and dumped my brown bag of edibles out he went through everything and began reading the packages and I was sure I was going to jail. He called a lady over who I assume was his boss she looked at everything and said it was fine but told me I couldn’t bring back my VVS syrup bc it was over 3.4oz and I was gonna have to go downstairs and convert my luggage into a carry on if I wanted to keep it. I was forced to leave it and two mixers that I packed with it bc I didn’t have time and didn’t want to pay extra to convert it into a checked bag or be forced to go through TSA checking again. Some nights I sit and pray that one of the airport workers drank it instead of letting it go to waste😔 I was able to get my wax and other edibles through though😂😂😂
My dads cousin came back from cali and gave me two bags of edibles. We asked how he brought them back, and he explained that he had them in his suit case. If you are leaving from a place that has legal weed TSA doesn’t really care. But if you are leaving from NC and TSA finds edibles in your bag they might say something but they won’t call the cops unless you have like 20 packets of edibles.
SWIM recently flew with homemade brownie edibles. Had 6 of them in a carry on bag with clothes, electronics, etc. Each were individually wrapped and placed in a small brown bag from a local gas station, along with candy bars and a bag of chips. Got through no questions asked. I’d say as long as you’re not trying to smuggle a questionable large amount, and they don’t smell to high heaven, there is no need to worry.
