When Will Cruise Lines Allow Unvaccinated?

Starting September 3, 2022, fully vaccinated passengers over 12 and those aged 11 and younger will no longer need a pre-departure test. Unvaccinated passengers 12 and over can cruise as long as they provide a recent negative self-test result taken within three days of embarkation. Carnival Cruise Line has updated its pre-cruise testing protocols for unvaccinated guests for voyages departing September 6, 2022. Vaccinated guests must continue to provide evidence of their vaccination.

As of September 5, 2022, Silversea Cruises no longer requires guests to be vaccinated so long as the destination allows. However, guests are encouraged to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines when eligible and carry them when traveling. Disney Cruise Line will drop Covid-19 testing requirements for guests on all sailings from the U.S. Vaccination is not required, but highly recommended.

Most cruise lines allow unvaccinated travelers to sail, as long as they meet testing requirements. Unvaccinated guests can cruise on all sailings departing from Europe ports, as long as they meet testing requirements. Most major cruise lines do not require guests to be vaccinated unless they are traveling from or to a destination that requires it.

Children are allowed to sail on Carnival Cruise Line ships, regardless of vaccination status and age. The new guidelines are effective for cruises departing on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 or later, and include additional guidelines for vaccinated guests.

What countries require proof of COVID vaccine?

Do any countries still require travelers to show proof of COVID vaccination?. As of mid-2023, virtually all countries—including the United States—have stopped requiring travelers to be vaccinated. However, some destinations still have mandatory COVID testing for travelers who aren’t vaccinated, so having that vax card in your pocket can make your trip easier. Examples include the Philippines, Bolivia, and Cameroon, all of which require unvaccinated travelers to have proof of a negative test before entering the country.

What about other travel vaccination requirements?. The CDC Travelers’ Health site is your best resource for learning about specific health concerns and recommended/required vaccinations for each country. Enter your destination in the drop-down menu to see a list of the vaccines the CDC recommends, such as hepatitis A and typhoid. Yellow fever vaccination may be required for travelers coming from countries where there’s a risk of yellow fever transmission.

  • I’m confused as to why you need to get tested for 6 night or more and not for a 5 or less. Only reason why I see that is because they don’t really care if you have covid since it’s a short cruise compared to the longer ones. Have you talked to them about what is the reason for that? In reality it doesn’t make sense

  • Just got off Navigator this week, loved that they have people singing about washing your hands before entering the buffet. Hated that people walked by without doing so sometimes. Kinda liked that everyone got tested beforehand even though it was an additional cost to have done. So happy to finally get to cruise again!!

  • So like your article and with what it says on the Royal Caribbean website (even when you are checking in on the app) it says cruises that are 5 nights are less, vaccinated guests do not need to take a covid test. But when I called Royal Caribbean support, they are telling me that this rule is only in effect from Aug 8th to the 14th and that by my trip (Sept 5th out of Miami going to Bahamas for 4 nights) a negative covid test will be required again. But nothing on the website or on the app does it say anything like that. Who am I supposed listen to? Those that don’t call support won’t know and won’t be able to plan ahead with testing.

  • So, do employees have to get tested? Do employees work different cruises? Say, they work a five day (or less) cruise where unvaccinated passengers are allowed on board, can any of those employees then work a cruise 6 days or more? If so, they could easily pass along Covid from unvaccinated passengers to passengers who have been vaccinated.

  • This is so confusing my family and I have been vaccinated and we are leaving out of Fl and it’s a 4 nights going to Bahamas. Aug 15 sailing and I thought we didn’t have to test I thought as of Aug 8 it changed to no pretest. So to make sure I called royal’s customer service and they said everyone has to do a pretest they got new updates. This is so confusing

  • Royal doesn’t seem to care once you step off the ship. Through Royal I had booked transportation to the airport from the Ovation. Bus was full and two people were coughing consistently for the entire trip of 30 minutes. Unfortunately I was sitting across the aisle from one of them. Three days later I have Covid, four days later my wife has Covid. We went through vaccinations, testing, and many $$$ for this trip and now I lye here very sick and scheduled for surgery in two weeks which is now being canceled. These people were clearly sick and should NEVER have been allowed to board the bus. They were never questioned for a second probably because they couldn’t stop coughing.. Just want to take a second to thank all you involved in the bus system there at port 91 for not caring or doing your job.

  • We disembark on 2/12/23 on Oasis of the Seas, so we are hoping the testing requirement goes away before that. As for vaccination, my family is, and will be, fully vaccinated, but we do not mind if others are not, we agree with people having the freedom to make decisions that they feel are the best for them.

  • We just booked our first cruise set to sail feb next year. Was very excited, now… not sure i would have booked knowing that these changes would take place. Looking to finally had a family vacation after 2 years of pandemic life, not to be catching covid in the middle of or right after my vacation. Glad we are not sailing out of these ports & hoping these changes are not extended to the cruises sailing out of FL anytime soon. At least not until there is enough data showing that these changes have not significantly impact COVID rates on their cruises. But then again, who will be monitoring that?

  • This is so misleading – what about ports in Florida?? Come on Royal! Norweigen is way more ahead than y’all! I’ve had to cancel my cruise back in April (I had paid over $1,600 in drink packages and dining packages) because I won’t get the experimental jab that we all know now has like 2% effective rate! Are yall sticking it to DeSantis???? I’m sure Florida is your #1 port.

  • I am happy for unvaccinated people I really am. But I still don’t understand how you can allow unvaccinated and an no testing for vaccinated on 5 nights or less but you refuse to change it to any length cruise…. my cruise leaves early September happens to be a 7 day cruise. Feels kind of unfair not gonna lie.
