Scuba divers wear various swimwear, such as bikinis, dive skin, or rash guards, to create an extra barrier between their skin and the wetsuit. These lightweight, quick-drying items are essential for a comfortable diving experience. Diving briefs and shorts offer a snug fit, preventing bunching and discomfort. Compression shirts, also known as long-sleeve rash guards or vests, are often paired with diving shorts or rash vests.
To avoid discomfort, it is important to ensure that you still have undergarments underneath your wetsuit. Wetsuits may be ideal for those into scuba diving, but they can be difficult to slip on and off, especially without proper undergarments. The answer to what to wear beneath a wetsuit varies among divers, but some common options include regular swim trunks, rash guard tops, Lycra socks, and fitted bicycle shorts or diving shorts.
Choosing the right undergarments for scuba diving depends on the water temperature. In warmer waters, lighter undergarments will suffice, while in cooler temperatures or extended dives, swim trunks, rash guard tops, and Lycra socks are recommended. Fitted bicycle shorts or diving shorts serve as an extra layer when worn under a wetsuit, providing additional protection during dives.
In summary, choosing the right attire under a wetsuit is crucial for a comfortable and safe diving experience.

Do you wear a bra under a rashguard?
What do you wear under a sun shirt?. Like rash guards and swim shirts, you could wear a sports bikini top under a sun shirt. However, since these are not swimwear, you could also wear a sports bra, normal bra or no bra – depending on how you intend to spend your day!
There’s no definitive expiration date for your rash guard, but there are a few ways you can maintain its quality and UPF rating after long days in the sand and sun.
Whether you just finished swimming or snorkeling, or just hopped off your surfboard, immediately rinse your rash guard with cold, fresh water and let it air dry. Never wash your rash guard (or any swimwear!) with hot water or in the washing machine with regular clothing. As a general rule, we suggest washing your rash guard by hand to prevent any unnecessary damage.
Do you get wet in a scuba suit?
Wetsuits get their name because you still get wet while wearing one. Your body quickly heats the thin layer of water that gets in and you’re insulated from the cooler surrounding water by the wetsuit material. You choose your wetsuit style and thickness based on the water temperature where you’ll dive.
- Wetsuits are made from closed-cell neoprene with large, uniform bubbles that provide good insulating qualities. The neoprene is usually coated or lined with fabric or sprays to add strength and color, plus make it easier to slide into. Bare neoprene on the inside doesn’t slide on as easily, but does minimize water circulation within the suit.
- Wetsuit thickness is primary to warmth. Thicknesses start at 1 millimetre (mm) and progress up to 9 mm, with the most common being 3 mm (warm water), 5 mm (temperate water) and 7 mm (cold water) or a combination of these.
Wetsuit Styles. Style is also important to warmth and versatility.
What is the dress code for scuba diving?
You can wear regular beach clothes on dive trips in warmer weather conditions. In tropical waters you may also be diving without wetsuits wearing just normal bathing suits. However you do need to think carefully about sun protection as when you are out on the water there is no shade and you can burn very easily. Make sure you take some clothes to cover up with during the day and also ahatto shade your head. If you are diving in cooler weather conditions you should take some warmer clothes with you and awaterproof jacketto keep you warm and dry.
You need comfortable shoes if you are travelling by boat to your dive destination. Moving around deck is much easier if you have flat shoes with a good grip to the sole. Flip flops are alright on land but not very practical when you are moving your kit around and carrying out basic tasks on board as they can represent a trip hazard. If the weather is bad when you are travelling to and from dive sites you may need to invest in a pair of all-weather boots. Wet feet can be very uncomfortable and can make you feel cold so it is important to keep dry and warm as you may be travelling and waiting around for a long time between dives.

What undergarments are best for wetsuit?
For greatest results, choose a pair of diving shorts made of neoprene, which is buoyant and light but thick enough to give extra warmth. They are an excellent choice since they are composed of ultra-soft, comfy, and stretchable material that does not crease as you slide into your wetsuit.
Neoprene diving shorts give a light, warm, and comfortable experience. Aside from providing heat protection for your body, it can make wearing and removing your wetsuit easier. Hence, bicycle shorts are ideal for canoeing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and even surfing.
As they are placed tightly against your skin, you will not feel them even with your wetsuit on. And they will not restrict your movement.
Do diving suits keep you dry?
Wet suits don’t keep you dry, but they can keep you warm. Wet suits are made of waterproof, closed-cell, foam-rubber (neoprene) which insulates even when wet. The two main things that determine how warm you will be are the thickness of the neoprene and the snugness of the wet suit. The looser a wet suit fits, the more water will flow in and out of it, and the colder you’ll be. However, if a wet suit fits skin tight, most of the water that leaks in will stay there, and eventually your body will warm that water up to skin temperature. Once the water inside a wet suit is at the same temperature as your body, it no longer chills you. Contrary to a popular myth, the water inside a wet suit doesn’t keep you warm, at best this water is neutral, neither warming or cooling you. After you’ve warmed up the water inside a wet suit, the neoprene can do its job insulating you from the water outside the suit. Assuming a wet suit fits you snug enough, then the thicker its neoprene, the warmer you will be. Unfortunately, the thicker a wet suit is, the stiffer it is too, and the stiffer the suit, the less comfortable it is for active sports such as paddling. On the California coast in the summer, a 3mm thick wet suit may be thick enough for acceptable comfort for kayaking, but in the Northwest, a suit that thin will not give much protection from the weather or water. For kayaking in the NW, I prefer wet suits that are 5 or 6mm thick, SCUBA divers here wear suits with two layers of 6 to 7mm neoprene (12-14mm covering their core area). Almost all the wet suits marketed to kayakers are 2-3mm thick. So generally you need to go to a SCUBA dive shop buy a thicker wet suit. You don’t need to wear anything under a wet suit for warmth. Most people wear a bathing suit and perhaps a rash guard shirt under a wet suit to prevent chafing, but the warmth is determined by the thickness of the wet suit not the clothes you wear under it.
What do I wear under a dry suit?. Since dry suits don’t provide much inherent insulation (with the exception of some SCUBA diving suits), you’ll need to wear some clothes under them to stay warm. The colder the conditions, the more insulation you’ll want to wear. Even though dry suits seal out water, it is possible to get wet from your perspiration or a leak; so as with other outdoor sports, the best types of clothing to wear under a dry suit are clothes made from materials that insulate even when wet. This includes polypropylene, pile fleece, wool, etc., but not cotton. A layered clothing system provides a versatile choice of insulation thickness’ to deal with a broad range of weather and water temperatures, but in winter conditions, where you know you’ll need a thick layer of insulation, it may be more comfortable and certainly faster to get dressed if you use a single thick (i.e. 200 weight pile fleece) layer rather than a large number of thin layers. A one-piece uni-suit style liner suit is worth considering as it will prevent cold spots from shirts coming untucked from long johns.

Do you wear a bra under a wetsuit?
You have to think about your comfort level when considering whether to wear a swimsuit underneath a wetsuit. Your wetsuit is designed to fit snugly against your skin, providing an extra layer of insulation against cold water and reducing water circulation. Wearing a swimsuit underneath can potentially introduce additional seams and materials that might cause discomfort or chafing to you. You also might find that your swimsuit moves around and bunches up underneath your wetsuit which might cause you further irritation and discomfort. You’ll need to be sure that your swimwear is made of lightweight material otherwise that combined with a tight wetsuit may limit your freedom of movement. The best thing might be to wear a pair of swimwear briefs or bikini bottoms and a sports bra underneath your neoprene wetsuit. You could also look into sports underwear rather than something that covers your entire body. If you are worried about the seams chafing, you could also consider a rash vest. This will add an extra layer between you and your wetsuit to help protect against seams rubbing your skin.
Hygiene is another crucial aspect to consider. Wetsuits are typically used in environments where water quality varies, including at the beach, oceans, wild swimming spots and lakes. By wearing a swimsuit under your wetsuit, you create an additional barrier that helps maintain cleanliness. This layer can minimize direct contact between your skin and the wetsuit, reducing the chances of bacteria or other contaminants being transferred. So if you are particularly worried about the water you are swimming in an extra layer will only help.
Wetsuits are designed to be worn directly against the skin, this will help with the thermal insulation and will give you extra warmth during your swim or watersport activity. Wearing a swimsuit beneath a wetsuit may actually work against what the wetsuit is trying to do, as the swimsuit may create pockets of trapped water, compromising its insulation. So although you are wearing another layer, you might find yourself getting colder more quickly when swimming in colder water. This may be less of an issue during warm water swims. You should try both options in colder temperatures and warmer temperatures.
What color not to wear when diving?
Alternatively, divers and swimmers can probably reduce the chance of an interaction with a shark by avoiding bright and highly contrasting swimwear or dive gear. We personally prefer to use dark blue or black fins, mask, tank, and wetsuit while diving.
Make a point of wearing your dive watch under the cuff of your wetsuit, thereby eliminating any chance of light reflection off the face of the watch attracting a shark or barracuda. Similarly, one always should avoid wearing jewelry because the glint of light reflecting off metal approximates the glint of light off the scales of fishes, the normal food items of most sharks.

Should I wear a wet or dry suit scuba diving?
Keeping warm — a dry suit vs wet suit. The main difference between a wetsuit and a drysuit is their suitability in warm or cold water. Depending on thickness and personal tolerance, wetsuits are popular across tropical and temperate destinations. However, chillier temperatures below 10ºC/50ºF demand the added protection and warmth of a dry suit. In fact, they’re mandatory in ice diving hotspots, like Silfra!
What to wear under a dry suit or wetsuit. A drysuit’s warmth depends on undergarments, and divers can flex their choice of clothing to suit the temperature. Bring out the extreme thermals for winter ice diving, or opt for a thin base layer during summer. On the other hand, wetsuits don’t have space for additional insulation beyond a rash vest. For this reason, dry suits can adapt to a wider range of climates and seasons.
Training. One important difference between a wetsuit and a dry suit is the need for proper training (such as the PADI Dry Suit Diver course). A wetsuit is simpler: put it on, adjust your weighting to compensate for the thickness of the neoprene, go on your dive — but you need extra skills to use a dry suit safely. Like your BCD, mask, lungs, or any other air space, the air inside a dry suit compresses or expands as you change depth. Learning how to counter these effects is key to maintaining your buoyancy and comfort.
