GM’s updated Super Cruise is now operational on a combination of divided and undivided state and federal roads, including iconic routes like the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway, and the Mother Road. The system, which includes advanced driver assistance systems, aims to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow by allowing hands-free driving on designated roads. The network of roads compatible with the driver-assist system in the U.S. and Canada will grow to more than 400,000 miles, including some undivided highways. By next year, the Super Cruise network will be accessible on about 750,000 miles of highways across the U.S. and Canada.
In 2017, GM launched Super Cruise, which had around 130,000 compatible highway miles. In 2022, that number has nearly doubled. To win over more satisfied customers, GM expanded access to technology through features like Super Cruise™ 1, which can only be engaged on compatible roads where lanes are separated from opposing traffic.
The new roads have already started to be added incrementally over-the-air at no additional charge and will continue to be added through 2025. With an ever-growing network, select eligible GMC vehicles can travel on over 400,000 miles of compatible roads throughout the United States and Canada. The new batch of compatible roads makes it the largest hands-free operating domain in North America, nearly six times the coverage of other hands-free technologies.
Super Cruise is the first true hands-free driving-assistance technology for divided and compatible highways, making your commutes never be the same.

Does super Cruise work on all roads?
Super Cruise can only be engaged on compatible roads where lanes are separated from opposing traffic — think a divided, limited-access highway, not a suburban street. There are currently more than 400,000 miles of Super Cruise–enabled roads in the U.S. and Canada. These roads have been specially mapped by LiDAR to provide Super Cruise the data needed for hands-freedriving. Explore the map of Super Cruise–enabled roads to find ones on the way to your next destination.
Currently Super Cruise is available on the following vehicles, when appropriately equipped:
- 2018–2020 Cadillac CT6
- 2021–2022 Cadillac CT4
- 2021–2022 Cadillac CT5
- 2021–2022 Cadillac Escalade
- 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV
- 2022 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2022 GMC Sierra
- 2022 GMC HUMMER EV

The Super Cruise driver assistance technology uses Global Positioning System (GPS) sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision map and network of cameras to maintain automatic control of vehicle steering on compatible roads. The GPS uses real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s location while the Lane Sensing Camera detects the marked lanes on the road to help the vehicle automatically steer and maintain lane position.
The system works with Adaptive Cruise Control†, which is designed to detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path and accelerate or brake the vehicle to maintain a driver-selected following gap time from a detected vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic conditions.
When engaged, Super Cruise utilizes a Driver Attention System. It provides feedback on system status while tracking the driver’s head position and using alerts that prompt the driver to pay close attention to the road and steer manually when needed.
Can you travel between systems in Supercruise?
Using Supercruise to attempt to travel between systems will just result in you traveling a very long distance, as you will not actually switch which system you are in, as you currently cannot change systems using Supercruise.
Supercruise is a method of faster-than-light (FTL) travel within star systems. A ship that is in supercruise can use the Frame Shift Drive to travel at speeds between 29.9 kilometers-per-second to 2001c superluminal (faster-than-light) speeds. It allows a ship to cross entire systems in a relatively short amount of time.
Supercruise uses the ship’s Frame Shift Drive to compress space in front of the ship and expand it behind the ship, essentially moving space around that ship. This negates any time dilation, as the ship is always traveling less than the speed of light relative to its “frame” of compressed space.
In supercruise, speeds are typically measured in multiples of the speed of light, represented as c or in megameters per second, represented as Mm/s (1c = 300Mm/s). A ship that is traveling at 1c is therefore traveling at the speed of light. Speeds in supercruise are highly dependent on distances from large bodies of mass, and the maximum speed of 2001c is only possible at great distances from massive objects, requiring almost an hour of supercruise travel away of all stellar bodies.

What roads are hands-free compatible?
By the end of this year, that number will double to over 400,000 miles of Super Cruise-able roads thanks to the new inclusion of undivided highways to the database of high-resolution maps. These federal and state highways and routes will flesh out the Super Cruise network and connect smaller cities and townships that the mostly interstate-based maps missed. This includes many famous roads such as US Route 66, California’s Pacific Coast Highway 1, the Overseas Highway in Florida, the Trans-Canada Highway and more.
The new broader road network will be available for vehicles built on GM’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP) electrical architecture running the second-generation of Super Cruise the update that also introduced automatic lane changes and towing capabilities to the tech starting later this year, both for new purchases and those currently on the road via a free over-the-air update. For now, that list includes the Cadillac CT5, CT4 and Escalade, the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado. That list will be joined by the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Lyriq EV in the near future. Vehicles on older architecture running the older version of Super Cruise like the current Cadillac XT6 may not get the upgrade, but will continue to operate all the same on divided highways.
Over the next year, General Motors will expand the availability of Super Cruise across its portfolio of brands with plans to eventually offer the technology on 22 models in total by the end of 2023. The automaker has also announced the next-generation Ultra Cruise, which is expected to arrive in 2023, bringing door-to-door hands-free navigation on over 2 million miles of highways, city streets and rural roads.
Does super Cruise work with Google Maps?
It can then start the move, activating the turn signals as needed. Improved navigation display: When choosing a route, vehicles with the embedded Google Maps app will display Super Cruise compatible roads in the in-car navigation system. This will allow drivers to find and choose hands-free driving routes.
