The Red Kayak is a coming-of-age story set near the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, focusing on the life of 13-year-old Braden Parks (Brady) along the Corsica River with his family. The novel takes the form of an extended flashback, with only the first and last chapters unfolding in the present day. The novel explores profound themes and offers insightful reflections on morality and accountability, delving into the complexities of guilt.
The Red Kayak is primarily constructed as a moralistic tale designed to assert the integral nature of truth to morality. The novel is preceded by a quotation from Sophocles and features an exciting tragedy when the DiAngelos kayak overturns in the bay, leaving Brady wondering if it was more than an accident. Soon, Brady discovers the terrible truth behind the kayak.
The main theme of the novel is determination, as Brady has incredible determination in searching for Ben and does not give up until he finds him. The story is centered around loyalty, choices, courage, and doing the right thing, even when faced with moral dilemmas. The most apparent theme is faith and forgiveness as a source of strength, as demonstrated by Immaculee’s faith guiding her through the genocide and how forgiveness helps her overcome violence, guilt, and anger.
Red Kayak is considered realistic fiction due to its credible events, authentic characters, and true-to-life themes. The main theme of the book is always telling the truth, as the protagonist feels partially responsible for the death of a three-year-old.
