Does Tennessee have a seaport?

The International Port of Memphis is an active port in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It is mainly located on President’s Island, which is a peninsula. However, it also extends between miles 725 and 740 on both the Tennessee and Arkansas sides of the Mississippi River. It is the second largest inland port on the shallow draft portion of the Mississippi River, and the fifth largest inland port in the United States. It has the ability to connect to sea via the Mississippi River, by rail using any of the five Class 1 railroads in the city, by road via I-40 or I-55, and by air using FedEx.

In 1946, the City of Memphis and Shelby County governments developed a concept for a new industrial area with river access that was separate from downtown, but close enough for commerce. The chosen location for this concept was President’s Island. However, President’s Island was a flood plain; this was resolved by the creation of a closure dam connecting the northern tip of the island to shore. A harbor was dredged on the slack waterside of the island, with the materials retrieved from dredging being used to raise land along the slack water to create an industrial park.

A partial list of companies located at the Port of Memphis as listed on their website include:

Is Cape Canaveral the same as Port Canaveral?

Name changes. A post office in the area was built and listed in the U.S. Post Office application as “Artesia” and retained this name from 1893 to 1954. It was “Port Canaveral” from 1954 to 1962, and then the City of Cape Canaveral from 1962 to 1963, when a larger post office was built.

Cape Canaveral (Spanish: Cabo Cañaveral) is a cape in Brevard County, Florida, in the United States, near the center of the state’s Atlantic coast. Officially Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973, it lies east of Merritt Island, separated from it by the Banana River. It is part of a region known as the Space Coast, and is the site of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Since many U.S. spacecraft have been launched from both the station and the Kennedy Space Center on adjacent Merritt Island, the two are sometimes conflated with each other.

Other features of the cape include Port Canaveral, one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. The city of Cape Canaveral lies just south of the Port Canaveral District. Mosquito Lagoon, the Indian River, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore are also features of this area.

Humans have occupied the area for at least 12,000 years.

Can you boat from Chattanooga to the ocean?

In March of 2017, withCygnus out of the water for the Winter, I had an opportunity to help with the delivery of a newly-purchased 40′ Albin trawler from Chattanooga, TN to Stuart, FL.

Chattanooga? Yes, there is a way to get to the ocean from there.

The Tennessee River goes West to the Tennessee/Tombigbee waterway, a man-made channel that runs South to meet up with the Black Warrior and Tombigbee Rivers, ultimately joining with the Alabama and Mobile Rivers and continuing down to Mobile Bay. From Mobile Bay, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway can be followed as far as Dog Island, off Carrabelle, Florida.

From this point, vessels must follow one of the only two open-ocean segments the Great Loop; crossing Florida’s “Big Bend,”before reaching the protection of thethe Gulf Intracoastal again just North of Tarpon Springs.

The Intracoastal can then be followed Southto Ft. Myers, at which point it crosses peninsular Florida via the Okeechobee Waterway along the Caloosahatchee River, Lake Okeechobee and the St. Lucie River out to the Atlantic at Stuart, fromwhere I flew home while the boat I had been helping delivercontinued North along the Atlantic Intracoastal in the company ofother “snowbird” vessels.
