What Is The Best Wood To Build A Canoe?

The process of building a canoe involves transferring mold shapes from a drawing to a piece of plywood. Cedar strips are the best material for traditional canoes, while fiberglass or Kevlar are great for lightweight, durable canoes. Northern white cedar is the best wood for canoe ribs and planking due to its light weight, strength, flexibility, and rot resistance.

The Redwood canoe requires redwood strips to build properly but results in one of the most beautiful canoes on the list. Building a canoe might be easier than you think, and Ashes has prepared a complete primer for amateur builders considering their first cedar strip canoe. The canoe showcases a selection of finely chosen wood, likely cedar, known for its lightweight and water-resistant qualities—ideal for such a watercraft.

The highest classification of board lumber called select is subdivided into three categories: B, C, and D Select. You can mix in any type of wood you want in the canoe, such as poplar for accent strips, white pine for the entire hull, and white and red cedar. However, be wary of the difference in strength during construction.

Red cedar has advantages such as a lovely deep red color and being lightweight. While spruce may seem like a better wood for this use, cedar is more water-resistant. The two woods used for gunwales locally are cedar (rot resistance) and ash (rot resistance and tensile strength), never use oak. The boat is made from 14 x 34 strips of wood (usually cedar, but I used basswood on this one) laid up on a form to give them the shape you want.
