What Is Discover Scuba Diving?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program is a one-day, try-dive experience designed for adults and children aged 10 and up. It introduces participants to the basics of scuba diving without certifying them as a diver. The DSD program is not a full dive certification but a great way to connect with the underwater world and discover if scuba diving is for you. The course teaches diving skills 12 meters deep in the open waters of Thailand, which can be used as credit for obtaining a PADI Open Water Diver certification.

The Discover Scuba Diving program is designed for individuals 10 years of age and up who have never tried scuba diving before. It can be done at home or while on Roatan. The Cavern Diver Specialty course provides knowledge and skills to explore caverns correctly, allowing participants to enter far enough for adventure but staying safe.

How deep is discover diving?

The maximum depth for a Discover Scuba Diving experience is 6 meters (20 feet) for the initial pool session and 12 meters (40 feet) if you do the optional open water dive, but that does not mean you have to go that deep.

Can a divemaster do discover scuba?

With additional training, PADI Divemasters can conduct Discover Scuba Diving Experiences in a pool or confined water. They may also lead divers who have successfully completed a DSD experience on guided dives once the participants have made their first dive with an instructor. The DSD participants must be under an instructor’s indirect supervision and the maximum ratio of participants to PADI Professionals may not exceed 2:1. Any divemaster-supervised dives must take place within 14 days of the DSD.

What Courses Can Divemasters Teach?. After completing the PADI Divemaster course, a PADI Divemaster can teach:

What is the difference between discovery diver and ocean diver?

This course is available for aged 10 and over, we would suggest this course for the 10 & 11 year old who want to get started, we would suggest over 10s look to ocean diver as their first course.Your instructor will start by getting you comfortable breathing underwater in a pool or sheltered water and then develop your skills so that you are competent to dive safely in open water. What is the ratio for Discover scuba?

After Discover Scuba Diving participants have satisfactorily completed their first dive with an instructor, a divemaster may lead them on additional guided dives within 14 days. The divers must be under an instructor’s indirect supervision and at a maximum 2:1 ratio.

How much does Discovery dive cost?

The session consists of an introduction to diving by the pool as the instructor sets up your equipment. Then you have the chance to try scuba diving, first on the surface, then in the shallow end. If you are feeling brave you may also venture into the deep end under your PADI professional diver’ssupervision. This gives you the perfect chance to experience the adventure of diving under safe and controlled guidance.

How much money do you need to scuba dive?

Scuba Equipment Cost. Another cost in becoming a certified scuba diver is your personal equipment. This typically consists of a properly fitted mask, a snorkel, a pair of wetsuit boots, and a pair of scuba fins. The fit and comfort of your personal equipment are keys to having an enjoyable diving experience, and you shouldn’t scrimp on these items. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. Quality equipment will last many years with proper care, and will be a much better investment in the long run. By the same token, you don’t have to get the most expensive kit to have quality equipment. Most divers will typically spend between $200 and $300 on their personal equipment, and may spend quite a bit more if they are also purchasing a wetsuit and a personal dive computer.

A diver who wants to be comfortable and confident in open water will typically invest in a full equipment system. With well maintained, properly fitted equipment, divers minimize equipment issues and quickly become familiar with how everything works. Again, you get what you pay for, and spending just a little more on a full equipment system can typically land a higher performance package that can still be a bargain in the long run.

But what about renting? Isn’t it too expensive to buy that full system? If you look at average rental rates versus purchasing a full system, you can typically pay for that system with as little as 20-30 days of renting. Not only that, but most divers purchase systems that are much nicer and higher performance than the equipment typically found in the rental lockers of most destination resorts. By purchasing your own equipment, even a little at a time, you’ll save money in the long run and likely enjoy your diving even more!

The $99 “learn to dive” class and other expenses. Some dive centers will use training as a loss leader to get people to do business with their stores, hoping to make up the loss with equipment sales or other add-on sales later. This is OK, but keep in mind that such courses may typically be crowded, taught in as short a time as possible, and may not include all the costs discussed previously. Forgetting about price but focusing on value for just one moment, keep in mind that a dive center that charges a fair price for the course realizes that it takes time and practice to make good divers, and good instructors have to be able to make a living teaching these courses. All of that adds to overhead, increasing course prices, but as a consumer, you definitely get what you pay for with dive training.
