The Calgary Zoo in Calgary, Alberta, has reported the tragic death of seven polar bears, including Baffin, who drowned due to an injury sustained while playing with his adoptive brother, Siku. The 31.09m Citadel Yachts-built Polar Bear was seriously damaged following an extensive fire that engulfed the vessel. The zoo closed its Wild Canada Zone on Friday after the incident.
The Calgary Zoo claims that the anchor may have belonged to the Chinese container vessel Newnew Polar Bear, which was sailing through the area at around 1:20 a.m. local time. The 31m explorer yacht Polar Bear, launched by Citadel Yachts in 2011, has been destroyed by fire while dry-docked in San Diego. The blaze began around 9.15am and fire-fighters doused the 31m yacht with water, but with little initial success.
The 102-foot (31.1-meter) megayacht was en route to the shipyard for routine maintenance when it ran aground on the Zuniga Jetty at the entrance of the San Diego Bay. The 31m explorer yacht was built by Aluetian (now Citadel) Yachts in Tacoma WA in 2011. It is a big trawler yacht with an overall length of 26.7 m. The yachts builder is Sanlorenzo from Italy, who launched Polar Bear in 2018.
Although adult polar bears are known to avoid entering boats, they do not despawn. Polar Bear is a motor yacht with an overall length of 26.7 m and was built by Sanlorenzo from Italy. The zoo officials closed its Wild Canada Zone on Friday after the tragic incident.
