What Does Prf Mean In Sailing?

The Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used in competitive sailing events to level the playing field. It assigns performance ratings based on factors such as hull and sail design, and is unique to each local area. Deviations due to sail or power selection are corrected by adjustments to the standard boat base rating. PHRF does not use measurements and is protected by copy-right for use by US Sailing and sanctioned regional fleets.

PHRF certificates are assigned by sailing ability or inadequate equipment, and handicaps are based on seconds per nautical mile. For example, if boat A has a handicap of 150 and boat B has a handicap of 200, boat B is judged to be 7.2 RC.

The Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) is the number of pulses set out through the scanner in one second, between 500-4000. Longer ranges have low PRF. The term Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is protected by copy-right for use by US Sailing and sanctioned regional fleets.

Under sail refers to being in a ship or boat powered by the wind, with sails unfurled overhead. VMG indicates the speed of a sailboat towards or from the direction of the wind or an active waypoint. PRF stands for Proof, meaning: proof. If PHRF racing is the only game in your sailing town, consider whether your boat is right for your typical conditions.
