The SailZing Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) provides explanations, diagrams, and animations of the racing rules. A Disqualification Not Excludable (DNE) is a disqualification that is not excludable, meaning it cannot be discarded from the overall score. Rule A10 (Appendix A to the RRS) defines DNE as a disqualification that is not excusable.
When a jury disqualifies a boat from a race and awards the maximum number of points for the race, points may not be discarded from the overall score later. DNE is generally possible for violations of Rule 2, Rule 14, with major damage or injury, sailing after a blackout, or when a scoring system provides for excluding one or more race scores.
When a boat is scored DNE in a race, that score may not be discarded, and the next worst score may be used. For example, if a boat is retired, DSQ disqualified, or DNE disqualified (other than DGM), that score may not be discarded.
Repetitive short sounds indicate that a boat is no longer taking a penalty and the penalty remains. One short sound means a penalty is now completed, while one short sound means a penalty is no longer taking a penalty.
The RRS also contains a suggested mechanism for scoring at regattas, detailed in Appendix A of the rules. However, a regatta doesn’t have to use this mechanism.
In summary, the SailZing Racing Rules of Sailing provide a comprehensive list of abbreviations and acronyms related to sailing rules.
