What Defines A Mega Yacht?

A superyacht, megayacht, and gigayacht are terms used by boat builders and brokers to describe luxury vessels. A mega yacht surpasses the dimensions of a superyacht and is defined as a luxury vessel that measures over 60 meters (about 197 feet) in length. The difference between yachts, superyachts, and mega yachts lies mainly in their size, luxury, and amenities.

A yacht can range from 56 to 90 feet, while a superyacht can be larger than 200 or 260 feet. Megayachts are run more along the lines of a cruise ship or passenger ship and follow many of the same regulations, while superyachts can still follow a more specific approach.

A superyacht or megayacht is a large and luxurious pleasure vessel. There are no official or agreed upon definitions for such yachts, but these terms are often used interchangeably with the term superyacht, which refers to any privately owned yacht over 80 feet in length. Superyachts that are at least 200 feet or 60 meters fall under the mega yacht category, which are also the world’s largest yachts and may have special licenses that allow them to accommodate more than 12 guests at the same time.

All superyachts are opulent enough to be equipped with an object that represents the epitome of luxury—a limousine tender—like the Onda 321L. According to the MCA’s Large Commercial Yacht Codes definition, large means 24 meters and over in load line length, and the Code of Practice applies to yachts.

In conclusion, a superyacht or megayacht is a large and luxurious pleasure vessel that primarily consists of size, luxury, and amenities.
