Most major cruise lines prohibit smoking on balconies due to fire safety concerns. However, Costa Cruises, Fred Olson Cruise Lines, and Hapag Lloyd Cruises allow smoking in certain areas, typically designated in outdoor smoking zones. Fred Olsen, a UK-based luxury cruise line, has flexible smoking policies, allowing indoor smoking in the Connoisseur Club smoking lounge and VIP casino during play, and outdoor smoking on most decks, except areas of the lido.
There are currently five cruise lines that allow smoking on balconies. For smokers, Holland America Line, Seabourn ship, and all non-dining venues on Oceania allow smoking in rooms, but not on balconies. Costa Cruises is the only cruise line in the world that allows smoking on private balconies. However, some cruisers may try to sneak a smoke in the open air, as it can be a safety hazard.
