Royal Caribbean International’s new Icon of the Seas, launched in January, is currently sailing at 132% occupancy, according to Michael Bayley, president and CEO of MIAMI. Royal Caribbean currently has a total of 24 ships and is currently building new ones. Most sailings fall between 105-125 percent occupancy or 90-98 percent capacity.

Can you find out how full a cruise ship is?
Go online and create a mock booking. Before your cruise departs, you can head online and recreate your booking. This will tell you whether certain cabin categories are sold out, as well as a rough estimate of how many rooms are available within each.
Let’s take this sailing onboard Carnival Freedom which departs on November 11, 2023. At the time of writing, the website indicates that all interior and ocean view rooms for this particular sailing are sold out. While this doesn’t reveal how many people will be onboard, there are only two categories of rooms with availability!
Of course, you can also check a third-party website, too, such as Expedia, Cruises.com, or CrusiesOnly.
How to find out how many cabins are left on a cruise?
Do Mock Bookings for a Sailing You’re Interested In. If you have a specific sailing in mind, you’ll want to be doing mock bookings for that sailing starting the week after final payment is due. During the booking process you’ll be able to see how many cabins in any category are left.
If you’re already booked on that cruise and see that there are open higher-category rooms than what you’ve got booked, contact the line or your travel agent to see if there are any upgrade offers open.
It’s more difficult if you’re not already booked. If you see lots of empty cruise cabins, you can try contacting the line to see if a sales rep or a travel agency will offer you a good deal. Chances are high, however, that if no sale is advertised on the website, you won’t be offered a discount.
If this is the case, keep checking in. If cabins don’t start filling up as the sail date gets closer, the chances of a sale popping up increase.
How much does cruise ship captains make?
The average salary of a cruise ship captain is around $96,000 a year. However, some captains may earn more than $200,000 a year, while others may earn less than $50,000 a year. Generally, the more experienced and qualified a captain is, the higher their salary will be.
How full are most cruise ships?
Cruise ships can have occupancy levels above 100% when cabins are filled with more than two people. Most cabins are built for two people, and that’s the number of occupants that a cabin has to have to be considered fully occupied, according to the accounting standards used by cruise lines. But cabins on some ships also have pullout sofa beds and pull-down bunks that allow for extra passengers — usually children. When some of them are occupied, that can boost a ship’s reported occupancy numbers above 100%.
“We’re just delighted,” Bayley said of the sky-high load factors on Icon of the Seas.

How many passengers do Royal Caribbean ships hold?
Royal Caribbean’s smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line’s four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.
Royal Caribbean’s smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn’t eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

How do you find out how many people are booked on a cruise?

Cruise ships are large passenger ships used mainly for vacationing. Unlike ocean liners, passenger ships primarily used for transportation across seas or oceans, they typically embark on round-trip voyages to various attractive ports of call. There passengers may go on organized tours known as “shore excursions”. The largest may carry thousands of passengers in a single trip, and are some of the largest ships in the world by gross tonnage(GT), bigger than many large cargo ships. Cruise ships started to exceed ocean liners in size and capacity in the mid-1990s; before then, few were more than 50,000GT. In the decades since the size of the largest vessels has more than doubled. There have been nine or more new cruise ships added every year since 2001, most of which are 100,000GT or greater. In the two decades between 1988 and 2009, the largest cruise ships grew a third longer (268 to 360m (879 to 1,181ft)), almost doubled their widths (32.2 to 60.5m (106 to 198ft)), doubled the total passengers (2,744 to 5,400), and tripled in volume (73,000 GT to 225,000 GT). The largest have grown considerably since, particularly in passenger capacity; As of December2023, the largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, has a gross tonnage of 248,336, is 365m (1,198ft) long and holds up to 7,600 passengers.
Cruise ships are organized much like floating hotels, with a complete hospitality staff in addition to the usual ship’s crew. They cater to nautical tourists, with recent vessels being described as “balcony-laden floating condominiums”. The “megaships” went from a single deck with verandas to all decks with verandas, and feature ameneties such as theaters, fine-dining and chain restaurants, spas, fitness centers, casinos, sports facilities, and even amusement park attractions.
Cruise ships require electricity both for propulsion and onboard power. As with cargo ships, cruise vessels are designed with all the heavy machinery at the bottom of the hull and lightweight materials where feasible at the top, making them inherently stable even as passenger ships are getting ever taller, and most supplement design with stabilizer fins to further reduce rolling in heavy weather. While some cruise ships use traditional fixed propellers and rudders to steer, most larger ships use azimuth thrusters that can swivel left and right to steer, vastly improving vessel maneuverability.

Has the cruise line installed the most advanced sewage and wastewater treatment systems available instead of dumping minimally treated sewage directly into the water? In determining a cruise line’s Sewage Treatment grade, we compared the number of cruise ships in the cruise line that have installed advanced sewage treatment systems against the total number of ships in the cruise line. Ships with AWTS were downgraded in 2020 since no companies publicly report on the performance of those advanced systems.
Has the cruise line installed shorepower or adopted cleaner fuel worldwide? In determining the Air Pollution Reduction grade for each ship in a cruise line, ships that dock at a port and plug in to available shoreside power hookups were graded. In addition, ships were given credit if they utilize low sulfur fuels continuously worldwide at levels lower than required by international law.
