Kroger Stopping Its Senior Discount?

Kroger, a nationwide grocery chain, has announced that its Columbus Division will offer an extra 5 percent discount on in-store purchases for customers aged 55 and older. This comes after a coalition of consumer groups asked the company to stop using digital-only coupons. Seniors can take advantage of Kroger’s senior discount by meeting the age requirement of 55 or older, using their Kroger loyalty card or an alternate form of ID at the checkout, and notifying the store.

Senior Discount Day used to be a common practice across all Kroger stores, but it has since been discontinued. Branches that still offer it give seniors aged 55+ a five-percent discount every Tuesday if they present their Kroger Plus Card. Kroger occasionally offers a one-day-only Kroger Senior Discount Day, with a discount ranging from 5 off to 10 off for shoppers aged 55 or older.

On Aug. 2, those 55 and older can get a 10 discount on their entire purchase, though some exclusions apply, including lottery tickets, alcohol, tobacco, and fuel. Kroger discontinued two smaller targeted discount programs, Senior Day and Double Coupons, resulting in the discontinuation of these programs.

In addition to Kroger’s Columbus division, Kroger’s Cincinnati/Dayton division announced that customers aged 55 and up can get an extra 5 percent on their total in-store purchase on Dec. 13. While many major retailers, including Kroger and Walmart, have discontinued senior discounts, Kroger occasionally offers a one-day-only Kroger Senior Discount Day, with discounts ranging from 5 off to 10 off for shoppers aged 55 or older.
