The Bahamas is currently facing a Level 2 warning for travel due to high rates of crime, particularly in Freeport and Nassau. This warning is similar to other tourism-reliant countries like Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, which have Level 2 warnings. Most travelers experience safe and enjoyable vacations, but U.S. government personnel are not allowed to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.
Reported incidents are increasing in Nassau, including on Paradise Island, where victims have been drugged. To ensure safety, tourists should exercise extreme caution when embarking on jet-ski rides. The US State Department has issued a travel advisory urging Americans to “exercise increased caution” in the Bahamas, citing crime. All persons traveling to The Bahamas, and those inter-island from Nassau and Paradise Island or Grand Bahama Island, must obtain a negative COVID-19 certificate.
The Bahamas has been assessed as a Level 2 security risk, a rating that also applies to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Turks. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. To stay safe, tourists should exercise a high degree of caution, especially in Freeport and Nassau. The Abacos Islands chain, located in the Northern Bahamas, is a fishing, sailing, and diving paradise with few violent incidents.

Tourists are advised to exercise extreme caution, keep a low profile, and be aware of their surroundings. Other major tourist destinations with Level 2 warnings include the Dominican Republic, Denmark, Maldives, Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Travel advisors offer Bahamas travel advice, but it’s crucial to understand the context of a Level 2 warning for global safety and security.
Can anyone go to Paradise Island Bahamas?
The Bahamas requires a passport for entry and a visa upon arrival in Nassau Paradise Island. Additional paperwork may be required for certain situations. Nassau Paradise Island is one of the few Caribbean destinations that offers pre-clearance for U. S. Customs and Immigration services, allowing flights to enter the United States without the usual clearance. Lynden Pindling International Airport is the first airport outside the U. S. to implement TSA PreCheck.
U. S. citizens need a valid passport for re-entry into the U. S., and the Bahamian Government may require proof of return airline ticket and sufficient funds for stay. Voter registration or certified birth certificate are no longer accepted as proof of U. S. citizenship. If you don’t have a passport, visit travel. state. gov for more information on the passport application process.
Is it safe to walk in Nassau at night?
Nassau, a safe destination, is facing increased vigilance at night due to its moderate crime rate. The U. S. State Department advises increased caution, especially in areas prone to violent crime. Enhanced efforts, such as CCTV surveillance and boat safety regulations, have been implemented to protect visitors. Areas like the Exuma Islands are notably safer, but higher crime rates still demand awareness and precautions. Travelers should stay informed about localized crime hotspots and natural disaster risks.
Emergency services, including the Royal Bahamas Police Force, are bolstering Nassau’s safety infrastructure. The city comes alive at night, but also deals with crime, particularly in areas called “Over-the-Hill”, which see a high rate of violent crimes.

The average cost of an Atlantis Bahamas vacation in 2024 or 2025 is around $5, 250 per week for a couple, and $10, 500 for a family of four. The cost of an Atlantis Bahamas vacation depends on factors such as hotel selection, room choice, holidays and peak season months, booking days of the week, and taking advantage of special offers.
A large room with an ocean view will be more expensive, while midweek stays can save money compared to weekend getaways. Dining plans, activities, and excursions can add additional costs. The expenses at Atlantis Bahamas include room rates, food, activities, travel, other fees, and special offers.

The Abacos Islands, Cat Island, and the Berry Islands are among the safest in the Bahamas, with outer islands generally avoiding trouble.

What is the least safe Caribbean island?
The Caribbean is a popular destination for travelers, but some destinations are best avoided due to their reputation for crime, shark attacks, and poor health care. Some of the most dangerous Caribbean destinations include Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Kingston, Jamaica, Montego Bay, Georgetown, Guyana, Nassau, Bahamas, and Tiger Beach.
To avoid these locations, travelers should be cautious and choose their timing wisely. For example, the Bahamas’ Abacos Islands should not be visited during hurricane season. Despite these challenges, most Caribbean destinations have redeeming qualities, so travelers should stay vigilant.
To avoid dangerous places, travelers should know crucial details, such as which places to stay away from at night, avoid sketchy areas, leave fancy jewelry at home, avoid accepting food or drinks from strangers, and stay in a group when traveling outside the resort.
Haiti, the Western hemisphere’s poorest country, is considered a no-go zone due to gang violence. Department of State has issued a level 4 travel advisory, recommending tourists “do not travel” to Haiti.
Is it safe to walk in the Bahamas?
The Bahamas is known for its tourist areas, but it is important to stay vigilant, avoid walking alone at night, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables. Violent crime, including burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occurs in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Short-term vacation rentals without private security companies are advised. Commercial recreational watercraft activities are not consistently regulated, and operators may not have safety certifications.
To ensure safety, it is essential to review local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities. U. S. government personnel are not allowed to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands. Swimming alone is not recommended, and individuals should stay within their fitness and swimming capabilities. Be mindful of sharks and be aware of weather and water conditions.
Me and my wife went to the Bahamas in February . We did half at an Airbnb and the end at Atlantis. It’s ruff trying to get around without a rental car, and the jits were inconsistent. The people were dope they definitely looked out for us. If i go back I’d probably do Atlantis for the whole time to avoid the stress of getting around the island. Great vid Chews we appreciate the content
Thanks for this article! I am actually planning a trip here before summer 2024 and I’m planning on renting an airbnb and a car to get around! I’m from the Cayman Islands so I understand the difficulty of tourists getting around but they also drive on the left so that’s a plus and advantage on my end :)! Again thanks for the review on Nassau as this helps 🙂
Any tip I would give a tourist is to EXPLORE outside the resort. Many tourists travel to the Bahamas and want to stay in their resort during the entire trip. In that case, you’ve not really travelled to the Bahamas, you took a plane to a resort. Experience more culture, food, and meet bahamian people. Most of the cons mentioned here would be minimized if you travel just a few minute drive to Nassau which is the city that is walking distance from the resort.
Atlantis is also famous for the most expensive apartment called “The Bridge” located inside the bridge between two towers and where most of celebrities stayed at some point of time. I also love to walk along the island towards “The Only One Ocean Club” and attend their Versailles Gardens and the Cloister
I loved the water park. I completely agree with your assessment of the restaurants. The nicer options were very expensive. The food around the resort is very ok and way overpriced. Our first meal was literally 2 cheeseburgers, fries and a drink. It was close to $50 and wasn’t even that good. The Cove is overhyped. We thought it would be a quiet relaxing adults only area. It’s a complete party atmosphere. But the thing that was most annoying was the staff was extremely rude and had an attitude. They were much nicer in other less expensive areas. The marine experience was fabulous. I fulfilled my dream of being able to swim with a dolphin. It was not cheap but I loved it
Pro tip. If you have Marriott or Hilton gold status you can status match to Wyndham diamond. Then you can status match to Caesars diamond. Caesars diamond members get 5 free nights at the Atlantis Bahamas. Did this in 2020 and stayed at the cove for free. I think we still had to pay the resort fee though
We just got back from there. We stayed at the Cove. It’s beautiful. However, I highly recommend you ask your cab driver as soon as your land to take you to a local market to buy lot of water bottles. Unless if you’d like to pay $9 for a small one on the resort. And bring lots of snacks. Good is ridiculously expensive!
Atlantis is great and expensive. As a local who usually stay at Comfort Suites. I would say we have alot Anwrucan resturants in Nassau Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Wendys, Mcdonalds and some Great Bahamian Resturants etc ypu don’t have to eat at the resort . Go to the food stores as well and stock up on water foid snacks etc. Some come on down and enjoy
I recently went and I loved it! a lot of these are really good points but a few are really need to be updated. the food isn’t the best but it’s very basic, it’s definitely not the most bahamian food but some for expensive dishes are the bahamas type food. but every single place closes at 10pm, so get your food early! and for the rooms, they aren’t the best but with all the things you will be doing you will not spend that must time in your room. your room gets cleaned everyday so that’s pretty good. but there is many things that you do get, you obviously get access to the pool but also some certain pools if you are staying in certain towers. you also get a free metal water bottles with free refills for the water refill stations all around the resort. also most sodas you by at food places (in a cup not a can) have free refills! atlantis is really good for teenagers and there parents. but also make sure to explore all over, take that walk. it’s so worth it, especially at night. my brother and I had the best time walking around the resort all around at night. atlantis is really worth it!
We loved the Bahamas. Stayed at the sunrise villas 2 doors down from Atlantis. Food was great and authentic which we took advantage of everyday for lunch average spent $40 for the 2 of us. We had a full kitchen in our 2 bedroom villa. We went food shopping at the supermarket on the way there from the airport spent $125 on a week worth of food and had enough breakfast and dinners for 6 nights. $3000 for the week and had an amazing quite time. We did go to the Atlantis to walk around the shops one day just to see what the big deal is. They have a nice mall there with lots of designer shops like Gucci etc. but really you can get that stuff in the USA for less money plus the Bahamas was not the place I was going to get my next Gucci piece. Explore the island and go get fish and conch chowder from Potters Cay under the bridge to paradise island, it doesn’t get more authentic than that. ❤️Bahamas
Our family is going there again this summer. This will be our 5th time. My youngest was on 8 yrs old when we first went there. She is now 20 and she is still excited to go there. I always say this to anyone who has kid, parents should take their kids to Atlantis at least once. Everything else’s including the Disney water resort in Hawaii will never compare.
i went there but i didn’t stay at atlantis. i stayed at a hotel that was a three minute walk from the park called the comfort inn. they had their own affordable menu for lunch and dinner and also free breakfast, which atlantis doesn’t do. highly recommend the comfort inn if you want to save money!!!! because of this i was able to leave frequently and actually experience the bahamas. i went to an island and had a traditional bahamian lunch and then went snorkeling. everyone i met (locals and employees) were all super nice. all and all it was a 9.5/10, the only downside being the inconvenience of the location of everything. lots of walking involved in just exploring the hotel.
FYI, DONT BUY THE FOOD PLAN!!! it is impossible to spend the food allowance. You are restricted on what restaurants you can go to. I’m in Atlantis right now and we are going to loose $661 by buying the food plan for four people over 10 meals. I calculated the most expensive breakfast and dinner at all of the restaurants and if you have the plan you would loose $4 per day if you purchased the most expensive items every time.
As a black person I was treated horribly by the black bahamian staff along with my companion. For basic help including need to use front desk phone they gave us a hell of attitude plus eye rolls and suck their teeth at us like we were asking them to bake a cake from scratch. Each white person that came buy they had the biggest smile and was so helpful it was unbelievable. they are very well trained in master/slave mentality. Next they charge 10 percent gratuity on everything including buying a small bag of chips which will cost 5.00 minimum. A slice of pizza cost 10.00usd plus gratuity. That is not a joke or exaggeration. Lunch will cost no less than 30 per person and dinner 50 per person. There is no option around this. Atlantis rips you off because you are almost trapped in the island. It gets worse- the rooms cost you 350 or more then they force you to pay extra for utilities and pay extra for daily cleaning fee on top of this. They will not let you in your room until you pay these fees in full for total length of stay. We felt tricked, robbed and mistreated. Also to leave the island was a 15.00 cab ride per person each way to the local food place called the fish fry. At least big plate of food at fish fry is 10.00 usd but you got to pay 30.00 in round trip cab fare per person to get it. So the meal costs you 40.00 lol, but it’s a hell of a lot better than Atlantis. My advice do not stay at Atlantis and go to hotel where all the action is near the fish fry. Dont stay at atlantis if your black because black bahamian workers treat us like shit and treat white people like gods right in front of you.
I went in August of 2019. Everyone in my family (including grandparents and toddlers) had a really great time. There is so much to do and see.The staff and locals are very nice. The food is soooooooo good. The beaches were amazing, super clear waters that were a perfect temperature too. I suggest going snorkeling during sunrise or soon after, because there aren’t very many people making it where the wildlife in the sea is active. Me and my mom saw tons of fish and coral. There are a lot of neat shells on the beaches too. Personal my favorite beach to snorkel and find shells was the cove beach. All in all Atlantis is a really amazing place and I would highly recommend.
Here’s a couple cons and pros not included Cons: Marina village is not that great The food is sometimes mislabeled, I went to olives, ordered a flatbread with light balsamic, a flatbread came out it just happened to be drenched in balsamic and topped with an entire salad of stuff. The tap water is really hot that great, leaves a very strong aftertaste Kinda hard to use the bus system sometimes You really do need to shop for food outside of property if you want money left over The waterpark is split into a major section and a weird minor section across predator lagoon that’s kind of hard to get to if you don’t know how I was there for a Fourth of July celebration and every staff memebers pointed us to a different location to go to so during random events you could get lost The adventure time inflatable stuff isn’t there anymore Pros Dolphin cau is amazing and unlike certain places that shant be named (it’s sea world I’m talking about sea world) they treat their animals wonderfully The themeing is fantastic, if they released a book on the lord I’d read it The main waterpark is super easy to get around if you use the rapids (always get out at rapids 7 to get straight on the power tower slides) The food isn’t bad. Just average. Free refills The cruise ship guest are only there some days. Weekdays are very easy crowds The resort despite being massive is primarily one line unless you’re at reef or cove where it gets a little bit maze like for a bit but otherwise everything is along a main path from the convention center through the royal to the spa to dolphin cay to cove.
Back in July, I saw many cruise vessels docked in the waters surrounding Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. It was pretty unsightly. All the passengers exited to sightsee on resort grounds, crowding the restaurants/casino. I will never vacation at Atlantis again, especially because I had to fight bank charges they placed on my credit card after I was already home in WI…$800 extra for what they said was incurred expenses at various restaurants and a $400 deposit they said would be returned upon checkout was initially kept by them. All receipts were forged. It was a nightmare. Cash is not allowed in most of their shops/restaurants and now we know why.
I agree completely with every point made on this article. Eat outside the resort. Even the food in the Marina Village is not great. The conch fritters were horrible. Ask a cab driver to suggest some local eateries. Avoid the casino. Much better casino at the newer resort the Baja Mar. So my suggestion, stay at the Coral tower cause the Beach tower is ghetto. Eat and gamble elsewhere. The Bahamian people are wonderful and helpful and as I said ask your cab driver for suggestions.
very well done article….seems like real informative stuff…i was at the atlantis many years ago…and had a blast…. I am writing this in September of 2020,during the pandemic that has impacted much of the world, but especially the US and Brazil- where i have family, and hope to travel to in a couple months…We have plans to get to atlantis sometime next year, but no one knows how the future looks with Covid. Last i heard, flights FROM america are limited in most places because no one wants the headache of americans in their “backyards”- who could blame them. I think a few days filled with waterslides, great food, and cool aquariums are just what i need….hope to see you soon!… scott from manchester NH,usa
I went on a family trip to this place in 2017 and I cannot believe I over paid so much for the MOST HORRIBLE SERVICE IVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE. Everyone had an attitude. The food was astronomically expensive. Bottled Water was scarce. The resort itself isn’t even that amazing. Save your money! NOT WORTH THE MONEY The food is horrible. I was starving most of the time. The best food was when we went on a very sketchy cab ride in a local area outside the resort. Fish Fry and Pina Coladas. Skip the resort it’s NOT WORTH IT AT ALL and we went to everything.
I don’t know why anyone would want to spend that much money for a hotel that is over run every day with cruise ship passengers. 2,000 to 4000 at a time. You can’t even get a beach towel. Much better off going to the family islands. If you want the Atlantis experience, save your money and just go to Micky Mouse land in Orlando !
I just came back from the Bahamas yesterday. I stayed at the Atlantis hotel. The food was terrible. The hotel is also on a island 30 min away from the real good food which sucks because I kept paying $50 for taxi ride back and fourth. They don’t have Lyft or Uber. The hotel workers in the casino are scammers. They try to distract you so you lose your bet. The beach was amazing and hotel pool. The Marina was very nice and beautiful but $20-$50 for 1 hamburger is a rip off. It’s all rich people with big boats parked on the dock which is why the food is expensive.
I loved the resort, but we found ourselves in the main island exploring. We only spend some time at the water park. It’s a great place. It’s pricey but just beautiful. You review was pretty much spot in. There are pros and cons to this place. We loved eating at Anthony’s. I had fun in Nassau the people were great and taxi drivers would tell you all about the local politics and all the good places if you asked. Lol.
We just got back from there. Family of 4 expect to pay at least 400 a day on food. The VAT tax is attached to everything and so is gratuity. 18 bucks or more just for a burger. Be Leary of where you book your stay. We got scammed!! Paradise villas on the island scammed us – what they posted online was NOT what we ended up staying at – cockroaches infested nasty condo! We did love Comfort inn and includes a day pass for Atlantis. The beach on paradise island ( where Atlantis is) is beautiful. This article said look elsewhere and I don’t know how old it is, but the ocean was crystal clear and waves to play in. You’ll pay for your chair and umbrella from the locals. They do have service on the beach. We stayed one week, 4 people spent close to 4,000. Too expensive to take taxi anywhere as they charge by zones. 90 bucks for 15 mins. We walked 20 miles in a week. Free drinks at casino good thing to remember as everywhere else is way overpriced. Overall beautiful island just remember the tax and gratuity added to everything!!
Watch your credit card when you’re at ATLANTIS. We had to dispute over $900 in unauthorized charges AFTER we checked out and were on our flight home. They charged an additional 900 on top of our hotel bill. We had no outstanding charges but they said we had an unpaid bottle from the comedy club we attended. It was a nightmare to deal with because they do not answer any emails or return left voicemails. I will never go to Atlantis again.
I just got back from Atlantis. Fun stay, with all sea life through out the park. I would recommend going to sandy beach for a day. Private island. The beaches are nice as well. I can agree with the food prices. The one thing I was disappointed is the staff, not friendly. I did not feel the hospitality. That will be my con.
I live in the Bahamas. I went to Atlantis in July 4th and it was awesome, there was like a small festival and a bunch of people. I don’t live in Atlantis but I’ve been there a 1000 times. And this vid is actually right, the pizza’s are so overpriced and theres only one pizza place they ask like 10 dollars a piece. Btw dont worry about your kids getting lost, I got lost when I was about 7, I started crying and i was very scared. I was emediatly found by Atlantis’s personal security, a gaurd found me and took me by the hand and even talked to me to insure my safety and to calm me down. In a bout a minute I was back with my mom. So yeah Atlantis has a pretty good system for getting lost.
The hotel (we stayed at the reef), beach and pools are really nothing special. The unique thing about Atlantis is the water park, followed by the aquarium. The food was pretty lame, especially for the price. We had a decent time but we felt like they were trying to squeeze a dollar out of us at every opportunity…and succeeding. Probably won’t go back.
The Kingdom Of Poland, was founded in 1025, The Battle of Grunwald, Battle of Žalgiris or First Battle of Tannenberg was fought on 15 July 1410 during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. Oddly enough, I’m at Atlantis right now and ran across this article. We’re in day 3 of a 5 day visit and I think this article is pretty spot on. The food has been average. I would not recommend the BBQ, very dry. I think they pre make everything and keep under heat lamps to get people in and out fast. Pizza was ver good…forgot the name but it’s down by the Marina by the Coral. I’ll update more in a couple days when we finish our trip.
Atlantis is one big rip off. The restaurants are sub par and over priced. Your better off staying over at Margaritaville where all the action is and it’s cheaper and nicer. Atlantis is overrated and they price gouge you on everything. If you stay over where tye Bahamas residents are at you get to meet someone really nice people, and better food way way cheaper. We always call big mama who is a taxi driver over there she has been picking us up Everytime we go there, she was born and raised in Bahamas, super nice lady. We give her good tips because she showe us all the nice areas and telss us where not to go.
been going for last few yrs as the casinio i go to gets me a room for 4 days and my wife 3 days have learn after first time to take taxis from airport cost think 5 dollars more but we get them to take us to a super market to get some soda /water /milk/ceral and a few snacks ussally spend 40 dollars on this we have stayed at beach/coral/royal as u stay in diff places beach is like a clean quilty inn room food is expenise with all the taxes at resort market place has alot of diff food and diff prices at buger shack meals big and we ussally just charge 1 to room as most i see there dont even eat half there meal and the casinio ussally comps most of my charges last time it cost 75 dollars after 8 days if u gamble always ck with the casinio host prior to ckin out so u get best deals also heard other said wrong charges u can look on tv daily to charges and if not u leet them now rt away as i have had it happen but was fixed rt away
Loved it. Yes expensive, but so much to do. Had my time with the Dolphins, one of my best experiences. Beautiful property. Carmen’s restaurant has huge huge portions, suggest sharing, therefore save cost. Also they had a free theater in the property with up to date movies. Went on both lazy river rides, be careful on fast one, remember to tuck in at fast curves Ao much to do and see Loved it
Me and my family got all-inclusive when we went for the first time and ended up spending over 3.3million dollars! (but we did do everything you could do there. ) and then the second time we didn’t get all-inclusive and it was probably 2.4million but we were relaxing most of the time sooooo… ( also I’m not trying to brag I’m just saying that it can be very expensive but my family also brought 11 people so yeah)have fun
I was just in Atlantis hotel in Nassau in November 2019 I do not recommend this place at all Over price the hotel’s a little run down not worth the money there was no night entertainment like music outside by the beach nothing like that it got windy and choppy one day they closed the whole beach never heard of that before there’s other beautiful islands to go to do not go to Nassau do not stay at the Atlantis overprice not worth it Turks and caicos Saint Martin Saint Lucia all beautiful islands go to one of them Don’t waste your money going to Nassau and stayed at the Atlantis..
There was nothing good about it except the natural beauty and aquatic life. Lifeguards can barely swim. Place is not even close being worth the money. Hotels are old, rooms are beat up and moldy. Food is total crap and insanely expensive. The meal plan is not worth it, and 50% or the time they will screw up your bill, and that will take you a lot of time to fix, including infuriating confusing explanations. Easy to get lost, as one of our kids did. Workers were striking and had rollin blackouts on Black Friday. Yes giant Cruz ship on land that you have to walk far!! Elevators are sketchy at best. Crowded and terrible service. Water park is good but also sketchy at the same time. Can’t drink the water. Much of the staff will lie to you straight faced or omit important stuff. Just got back 1 day ago, will never be returning
