Is Traveling To Bvi Safe?

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are no longer required to screen travelers for COVID-19, but they are advised to take appropriate precautions such as general sanitization and hand washing. Travelers should review the Country Security Report for the Eastern Caribbean, including the BVI, and prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. They should also review the Traveler’s Checklist and visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to their travel.

There are no COVID-19 entry requirements for the BVI, but countries may restrict travel or introduce rules at short notice. Travelers may enter the BVI through Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) and the seaports Road Town Jetty, Soper’s Hole Dock, West End, and Great Harbour. Most visitors from the United States, regardless of vaccination status, can enter the BVI.

Crime rates in the BVI are low, but some serious incidents do occur, such as armed robbery and drug-related gun crime. To protect personal safety and belongings, travelers should carry a mobile phone with roaming capability. The crime rate is generally considered safe for visitors, but petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs.

The CDC and WHO recommend vaccinations for the BVI, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, and meningitis. U.S. citizens are not specifically targeted for crime in the BVI, but victims of crime should report crimes to local police at 999. Many health risks experienced by travellers cannot be prevented by vaccines, and other measures need to be taken. New Zealanders traveling or living in the BVI should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.

  • Have to push back on the statement “there isn’t much going on in Tortola”. We have spent years in the BVI and the main island offers the most things to do, eat and enjoy of all the islands in the BVI. As for the beaches, they actually have several of the nicest beaches in the world, you just have to venture around and find them. Smugglers Cove being one of them. While this was a good review in general, don’t discount Tortola during your visit, just avoid the touristy parts like Cane “Sugar” Beach 😂
