The lake at Cowans Gap State Park has been closed to all activities in response to the recently reported cases of E. coli infections.

“This decision was made after six positive cases and three additional probable cases of Escherichia coli O157:H7 were identified in persons who reported swimming in the lake during late July,” according to an e-mail this evening from Terry Brady, a representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The lake will be closed for recreational use until further notice, while the park will remain open for camping and other activities. Brady wrote that the investigation has shown no connection between the bacterial infections and the park’s potable water.

Cowan Lake is a lake in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in the Beaver River watershed. The primary inflow for the lake is Big River at the lake’s southern end by the town of Big River and the outflow, located near the lake’s northern end, is Cowan River at Cowan Lake Dam. The dam was originally built in 1937 and was upgraded in 1971. It is 4.2 metres (14ft) high and the total volume of the reservoir created by the dam is 40,334dam3 (32,699acre⋅ft).

Highway 55 follows the length of the lake along its eastern shore and Highway 942 runs up most of the length of the western shore.

At the southern end of Cowan Lake at the town of Big River is Big River Regional Park (53°50′16″N 107°01′26″W / 53.8379°N 107.0239°W). The park has a campground and boat launch on the lake’s shore. At the northern end of the lake is Cowan Dam Recreation Site (54°11′35″N 107°27′01″W / 54.1930°N 107.4503°W). It is a small campground at the dam that is accessed from Highway 55.

Prior to impoundment, the present lake bottom was mainly pastured fields. Several tree stumps were left standing in various areas during lake construction. Some standing trees remain in the upper end of the lake near the mouth of Cowan Creek.Cowan Lake has good populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, saugeye, channel catfish, muskellunge, bullhead and carp. A few Kentucky spotted bass are also present. Saugeye are stocked on an annual basis. Gizzard shad are the main forage species in the lake. Largemouth bass are taken on diving and surface lures, plastic worms and live worms around fallen trees on the south shore, near aquatic vegetation in the upper end of the lake, and in the bays along the north shore. Saugeyes are taken on plastic grub jigs tipped with a piece of worm near mainlake points and shallow areas adjacent to deep water. Other productive saugeye techniques include drifting with a bottom-bouncing night crawler or minnow rig, as well as casting or trolling silver-colored diving lures. Bluegill fishermen using redworms, wax worms and mealworms continue to have good catches from the fishing piers, around aquatic vegetation in the upper end and in the bays. Live minnows and plastic grub jigs have proven to be the best baits for crappies near the dam, around fallen trees or aquatic vegetation and in the bays. Muskies are taken by casting or trolling large plugs along points and dropoffs. Excellent catches of channel catfish and bullhead are taken on nightcrawlers, chicken liver and cut baits near the dam and along the south shore. Tailwater fishing can be productive for channel catfish, crappies, saugeye and muskies.The Division of Parks and Recreation operates and maintains parking lots, launch ramps, a boat rental, boat dock, bait concession, swimming beaches, picnic areas, hiking trails, campgrounds and cabins. Campgrounds provide drinking water, wastewater drains, flush toilets, shower facilities, trailer waste dump stations and picnic tables. A 10-horsepower limit on outboard motors is enforced on the lake.

Cowan Creek was named for the area’s first surveyor, John Cowan. A dam was completed across Cowan Creek in 1950, and in 1968, Cowan Lake was dedicated as a state park.

Cowan Lake lies near the Cincinnati Arch, an uplifting of bedrock that occurred during the Appalachian Mountains’ building process. The erosion of this arch in the Cowan region exposes fossil-rich limestone. The limestone near Cowan and other parts of the exposed arch are some of the most famous fossil hunting fields in the world.

A fine stand of beech-maple forest can be found around the lake at Cowan. These woodlands contain beautiful wildflowers including bloodroot, wild ginger, spring beauties and trillium. The woods, fields and lake provide habitat for a variety of animals, including ring-neck pheasant, ducks, geese and herons. Songbirds such as eastern bluebirds, catbirds, house wrens and many others inhabit the fields and bushy areas of the park. Mammals include white-tailed deer, raccoon, opossum, woodchuck, skunk and others.
