Is It Safe To Travel Alone To Mykonos?

Mykonos is generally safe for solo travelers, as it combines the beauty of an Aegean island with its cosmopolitan nature. It is considered the party animal of the Cycladic islands, Greece’s answer to Ibiza, with sun-seekers flocking to beach clubs by day and bass lines pounding. Mykonos is one of the Greek islands and is an ideal place for solo travelers, whether they are experienced solo travelers or embarking on their first adventure.

However, there are risks associated with traveling alone, such as pickpocketing and petty crime around tourist attractions. It is important to stay vigilant, especially during the night, and familiarize yourself with the main town and your accommodation area. The best area to stay in is in or near Mykonos town, convenient for the trip.

When traveling alone, it is essential to be careful about your safety every day. Mykonos is generally considered safe for solo female travelers, but being responsible will make it an excellent reason to come alone. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag-snatching are relatively rare.

To spend two days in Mykonos, Greece, as a solo traveler, consider what to do, where to eat, where to stay, and budget-friendly ideas. While Mykonos and Santorini are recommended for solo travelers, they may not provide the chill island vibe if you prefer a more crowded experience.

In conclusion, Mykonos is an ideal destination for solo travelers, as it combines the beauty of an Aegean island with its cosmopolitan nature. However, it is crucial to be cautious when traveling alone, especially during the night and during outings.

  • Mykonos has a special place in my heart. I met my Australian husband when we were booked on the same tour of the Greek islands and Turkey. I didn’t know he liked me in that way but he would do little tings like buy me baklava and sit beside me at dinner – I just thought he was outgoing and being friendly. One of the days I thought this is when we found ourselves wandering the streets of Mykonos; he helped me pick out a pair of earrings, we ate gyros, and walked near the windmills just having a great time. It’s only when I flew back to the states that he got up the nerve to say how he really felt!

  • GUYS I HAVE ONE TIP AS A PERSON WHO LIVES IN MYKONOS PERMANENTLY, DONT VISIT THE ISLAND DURING THE WINTER SEASON (NOVEMBER -MARCH) I’m saying that because the island is really lonely and all the bars and shops are closed and to be honest it’s really depressing here during winter, visit us during the summer season, we all love seeing people after the depressed months of winter 😭💕

  • I was speaking to a couple of Greek guys about toilets recently (as you do) and they said the toilet paper in the bin habit never really had anything to do with the pipes but because most of the sewage especially on the islands went into septic tanks and the tanks couldn’t cope with paper and they were hard to empty. However, they said on mainland Greece loads of Greeks actually do sometimes put paper down the toilet and one of them said even he does it at his grandparents’ house on one of the islands. The main reason they gave was that the problems had been deliberately exaggerated by businesses and governments who couldn’t be bothered with maintenance, less use of septic tanks but mostly because modern toilet paper is designed to dissolve really quickly and even septic tanks will dissolve it. The days of toilet paper getting into a big wet clump in pipes is not really a thing nowadays unless you squeeze your toilet paper in your fist after you’ve used it (!) but the signs and the habits still persist. I don’t know, I’ve never been to Greece. I’m just passing on what some Greeks told me.

  • Wow! I hope you could one day visit South Korea too! It’s a country of interest by many more people nowadays. They have lots of UNESCO heritages such as the palace during the times of Chosun. And, recently, the Blue house is now opened to the public and it’s becoming an exciting visit for many people. The blue house was never open to the public before until this May where the New president of South Korea decided to move his Presidential office.

  • Thank you for taking time to do this amazing article. It is the perfect length, very informative, and an enjoyable article. You’re so fun & honest. We’re planning to visit Mykonos & Santorini in early October for our honeymoon this is the perfect coverage for Mykonos. We saw your Santorini article as well. We have a few questions for you since you had experience on both islands. In Mykonos:- I’m wondering, is your hotel located in an easier public transport access area? I know you mentioned the shuttle is free, but on their website, it says additional cost. Should we worry about that? Do they include breakfast or we pay separately? Do you suggest a bus rather than a car rental? Also, when I looked at 180º Sunset Bar, it has so many seats raw choices, and hard to pick which you suggested. Which one did you choose? Santorini:- there are a lot of articles but they’re on higher-end and didn’t give you much detail like this article. Where do you recommend us to stay for less nosy, great ocean view, decent pool, airport/ferry shuttle, and easy for public transport? Thank you for your time. I know it takes time to answer all of our comments.

  • Hey, I need a help please. Staying in Mykonos for the second time, though this time very short visit. We’re landing in the early afternoon, so I want to plan my first day after checking into the hotel (Mykonos Town). As it will be a hectic travel day it would be nice to get fast to the beach, to refresh ourselves in the sea, chill, and stay there for the sunset. Agios Ioannis seems like a perfect restful + sunset place, but I question whether we should maybe do this or some other beach quickly and then got to the 180 sunset bar instead? From your article it looks very nice. I just don’t want a fuss and rush as we won’t have that much time in the afternoon / before sunset to take a bus to the beach and back + walk to the town’s sunset. On the other hand, I remember from my last stay in Mykonos, that the sunset in the city is epic, probably the best I’ve ever seen anywhere, including Santorini. But maybe the sunset at the Ioannis beach overlooking Delos could be special too? What do you suggest? Do you think we will regret not seeing the sunset from Mykonos town during this year’s stay? Or is the sunset at Ioannis Beach similar? We already planned (for the other night we have there) sunset at Scorpios, which is more for the event there I guess, but if anyone has an experience with that too (and how the sunset compares to the Mykonos city or Agios Ioannis views) I’d really appreciate your help 🙏

  • There are only 30 taxis on the island because that is what’s imposed by local laws. They don’t want to fill the island with taxis so as to protect the island vibe /feeling. This has been an issue for decades… they want people to use the buses (which are more than fine). Believe me there were tons of business people who would have poured more taxis on the island if that was allowed… years ago now. So don’t waist your time trying to start a taxi business there 🙂

  • Thank you for all the info. Mykonos looks amazing! We’re cruising the end of May and only have 1 day in Mykonos, 7am to 4pm. I would appreciate your recommendations on seeing attractions here. We’re definitely not beach people. We love strolling around soaking up the culture and sight seeing. Thank you

  • Calling ahead for reservations is no good for us coming from Canada where our cell phone charge will be $17 per day roaming charge. We don’t use our cell phone outside of the USA and Canada. But thx for letting us know, good job we are on a cruise and so not need meals on shore. Re. the toilets, how awful, just like Mexico. I kept forgetting there to not put paper down the loo. Plus the loos were stinky because the paper was in bins. good to know though. We will only be there a day in May on our cruise. The prices sound really high for food. Makes cruising a good choice. I though Greece was supposed to be cheap.

  • Name of the hotel you stayed at (Ornos beach). I am planning to visit Mykonos for 6 nights early june. Was planning to stay at platis gialos. Would be grateful if u suggest a nice resort(either yours or something in platis gialos—with a pool. Travelling with my wife and 15 yr old son. Budget for hotel(150-200 euros per night For all three of us)

  • Just so you know, they DO have a POS at the Delos Tours booth, but it looses connection or it’s just doesn’t work for some reason. I’ve worked there for a season and they advise you to pay with cash in order to avoid delays on the booth’s line and to keep up with the schedules of the ships for Delos.

  • A question about the toilet paper as I wasn’t aware they did it this way. Is toilet people available in toilets? Or best to take some with you? Are you charged for use? Other countries that do it that way charge you for the toilet paper & use of the toilet before you go in and only give you 1 sheet 🤔

  • I just returned from Mykonos. I want to help people who are considering to visit this place with a child. Totally not recommend it. There is no activity for a child and Mykonos town is super busy and a chaos. If you have a child go in another place but not Mykonos. Also be ready to spend a lot of money!!
