Packing a knife safely for air travel is crucial to ensure compliance with airline regulations and secure the blade in checked luggage. To pack knives in checked baggage, choose durable luggage, pack knives separately in protective covers or sheaths, use tape to secure the sharp edges, and place them in a box or in a knife holster. TSA allows knives to be transported in checked bags, but they are not allowed in carry-on baggage.
To prepare your kitchen knives for packing, make sure they are ready before wrapping. If you don’t have a sheath, wrap the blade in a towel or bubble wrap and wrap a few layers of packing paper around the package. There is no restriction on blade length when packing a knife in a checked bag. Put all the tips into a sturdy plastic cup or similar vessel, then wrap in a dishtowel and tape or rubberband.
A knife guard is essential for safe transport, especially for bigger knives. Secure the knives into the knife block by taping them down at several different angles and wrapping the block in several layers of packing paper. Line the moving box with crumpled packing paper or a layer of bubble wrap to provide extra cushioning. When selecting a knife to transport, opt for a non-locking, folding blade that does not exceed 6 inches in length when open.
Place the knife in a pull-string pouch, wrap in a.3 inch thick layer of paper towels, and place it into a small tin filled with balled-up paper. Cut down the packing paper into long, wide strips that will cover the entire blade of your longest knife, plus a couple of inches extra. Place knife guards or blade covers on each knife to protect the sharp edges. If you don’t have any, you can use bubble wrap or tubing rolls.
