To repair scratches in a Royalex canoe, sand the area down with fine-grit sandpaper, apply clear epoxy resin, and let it dry. After that, buff out the area with a polishing compound. Avoid using aramid (Kevlar) or carbon for exterior repairs on Royalex boats as they are expensive and stiffer. Cut the first patch to match the outline of the dent, apply a thin layer of G Flex to the hull, and apply the patch.

For filling voids, fill the void with vinyl, a thin layer of ABS, Royalex foam, thin ABS, and interior vinyl. A successful Royalex canoe repair is possible with Gflex 650 Thickened Epoxy Adhesive. Bruce Newall and Stan Bradshaw describe how to do this. The NWC Royalex Repair Kit contains enough material to repair a canoe riddled with frost cracks or one buried in a snowbank then rediscovered with a two-stage Toro. Field GFlex Epoxy Aluminum Boat Repair Kit is great for small repairs to Royalex canoes.

One common issue with Royalex canoes is that the gunwales can become loose over time. High-grade epoxy can patch cracks or holes. Get one that dries to a sandable surface, smooth it out with progressively finer sandpaper, and rebuild the outer solid structural layer of ABS that has gone missing. Fill in the resulting void until it is flush.

For large areas under the pedestal, replace the delaminated vinyl layer with fiberglass cloth, epoxy resin, and graphite powder. Lightly dab the fabric with epoxy but only on the repair area. After drying for 8 or more hours, heat the affected area (usually the bow) with boiling water and bang the boat back into shape using a dead blow. How do you maintain a Royalex canoe?

A UV inhibitor such asUV Techor303 Protectantwill help protect Royalex, plastic and gel-coat finishes from fading. Think of 303 as “sunscreen” for your canoe. Apply 303 Protectant2 to 4 times per season. Though not as effective, Armorall also works.

Note:Frontenac Outfitters does NOT recommend waxing your boats hull. Although waxing will do no harm, it actuallydecreases hull speedand it interferes with 303’s UV protection.

GEL-COAT CANOE REPAIRS. Exposed fibreglass or Kevlar cloth could “wick” water into the cloth, which could in time begin to separate the boats cloth & gelcoat layers. A simple fix is to fill the area with 5- minute epoxy, for a more visually appealing repair we use gelcoat.

Can Kevlar be repaired?

I have repaired a couple of kevlar boats, one was severely in need of repair. I would start by spreading a layer of marine epoxy over all the cracks and let it set up. I would use a large layer of fine weave fiberglass cloth on the inside of the boat, large enough to cover all of the damage with one piece.

I have repaired canoes and other boats with both Fiberglass and Kevlar. I pretty much keep epoxy and kevlar and fiberglass in my basement waiting for the next project.

Kevlar does wick water to a greater degree than fiberglass and when it has been oilcanned like that it loses some of the rigidity since the epoxy has lost its strength. So yes as posted upthread you do want to use some cloth over the repairs to regain the strength of the original composite, and you do want to get the area sealed before it gets wet.

You are going to have to sand before you apply a repair and that can be problematic over kevlar. It’s going to tend to fur up and make a mess. Don’t try to sand through that, just sand down to the point where it starts to get furry and call it good enough.

Can you patch a Kevlar canoe?

Wipe the area to be repaired with acetone to remove any wax or UV protectant. Clean and sand the area to be repaired. On the outside of the canoe there is a layer of fibreglass, which will behave nicely when you sand it. The KEVLAR® on the inside will fuzz when you sand it, so don’t sand an area larger than your patch will cover.

Cut your patches. Use a minimum two inch wide patch on any crack. To limit fraying, cut a square or rectangle, following the threads in the fibreglass; do not cut circles. Avoid the temptation to pull stray fibres where you cut. That will just release more. Pull any fibres only afer the fibreglass has been wetted.

If possible, patch the inside first. It doesn’t have to look as good, so it’ll give you a chance to practice. Cut two patches, using four or six-ounce glass. The patch against the canoe should be a little smaller than the second patch, to create a single, smoother edge.

Lay both patches over the crack, and wet them out together, starting from the middle. Apply the epoxy resin, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Small amounts may be applied using your (gloved) hand or a foam brush. Apply enough that the damaged area is filled and the fibreglass becomes clear, but not enough for it to drip. Excess epoxy that is not soaked-into the fibreglass only adds weight, not strength.

Premium weight fiberglass, moderate weight Kevlar and even some ultralight Kevlar boats are made using vinylester or blend of vinylester & epoxy resins. Vinylester & epoxy resins flex better than polyester resins, which in turn help lengthen the life span of your craft!

How to fix crack in plastic canoe?

  • Using a small drill bit, put a small hole at each end of the crack so it doesn’t spread.
  • Plastic weld the crack to complete the repair. You will need a plastic welding kit with HDPE welding rods and it works in a similar fashion to a glue gun.
  • Plastic can also be repaired with a lighter or torch and plastic remnants.

When trying to repair a serious crack on your own, you are risking further damage to your kayak. It’s also possible that whatever you do will not be repairable by a professional. Think carefully before starting and proceed at your own risk.

Why is Royalex discontinued?

Royalex is DeadRoyalex was developed in the 1970s by the Uniroyal Corporation. Since then it’s been used by dozens of canoe manufacturers to produce thousands of durable performance canoes. In 2000 the Royalex division was sold by Uniroyal to Spartech, which continued to produce Royalex sheets for canoe production. In 2013 Spartech sold to plastics company PolyOne, which took a hard look at Royalex sales numbers. The company determined that Royalex was unprofitable and took steps to shutter the operation. PolyOne closed down Royalex production in 2014. Canoe manufacturers ordered up their last sheets, built their final Royalex canoes and turned the page on a historic chapter in paddlesports history. Royalex was dead.

The remaining Royalex canoes made their way through the retail pipeline. Prices crept upward as demand for a finite number of canoes rose. The value of used Royalex canoes increased. By the time all the remaining stock was gone, the price of a Royalex canoe rose above $1700. Even at those prices they sold out. There simply wasn’t an alternative to fill the Royalex niche in the paddlesports world.

Doing WithoutWhat happened next depends on which canoe company you’re talking about. With Royalex gone, some companies shifted their Royalex production into rotomolded canoes. For example,Old Town Canoehad previously produced the iconic Penobscot 16 and 17 canoes in Royalex. With Royalex gone, these models shifted over into polyethylene. Other companies worked to replace Royalex with composite constructions.Wenonah Canoe, where I work now, had long produced durable canoes from a polyester/fiberglass material called Tuf-Weave. Wenonah promoted Tuf-Weave as a Royalex alternative.Nova Craft Canoedeveloped an impact resistant composite construction that they called Tuff-Stuff to fill the Royalex niche. Both companies produced rotomolded plastic canoes as well. Many canoe companies were learning to do without Royalex.

Understanding Fiberglass Boats. Fiberglass is made from either polyester resin or epoxy resin, reinforced with layers of glass fiber. Fiberglass boat construction starts in a factory mole. The first layer is a gel coat, followed by a fiberglass cloth layer. Resin gets applied on each layer until it reaches the desired thickness. This results in a boat that is light enough to be buoyant. It is also very tough and harder to crack than regular glass or plastic. Also, fiberglass is more resistant to corrosion from UV rays and saltwater — making it an excellent choice for boat construction.

Average Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats. A fiberglass boat can last much longer than the pickup truck that you use to haul it to the lake! Royalex was a composite material, comprising an outer layer of vinyl and hard acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic (ABS) and an inner layer of ABS foam. The layers are bonded by heat treatment. It was used to manufacture durable, mid-priced canoes. Its supplier closed out production of the material in 2014.

Royalex is basically a board comprising a ‘sandwich’ of standard rigid ABS sheets in the core of which is an ABS layer designed to foam/expand during the heating stage prior to vacuum forming. Thus Royalex can be designed to form virtually any finished thickness to suit the end application. One just adds extra sheets. Since ABS has a poor resistance to UV a thin outer layer of UV resistant vinyl is generally included. This can be self-coloured or painted.

ABS is a copolymer of rubber and thermoplastic: Acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene. It was developed at US Rubber Co’s Chicago plant by Bob Pooley and was simply called Royalite. US Rubber was later renamed Uniroyal – a blanket name to encapsulate their worldwide enterprises, which previously had separate names. Later, Bob Pooley and associates continued work on Royalite to introduce a foaming/expandable element. This was accomplished at the Uniroyal plant in Warsaw, Indiana. The resulting product was named Royalex to recognise the expanding core.
