To make the repair, Super Alloy 5 and an oxyacetylene torch are used to seal the area that had been unsuccessfully sealed.

To fix a leak in an aluminum canoe, surface prep (wire) is done, and the aluminum patch is then applied. If the leak is along the keel-line seam, the best epoxy for aluminum can be used to repair holes in boats, oil leaks in cars, and handle various household repair jobs.

To fix a leak in an aluminum boat, it is important to let the boat dry and check the inside skin of the hull for wetness from various parts, such as the thru-hull, rudder port, shaft log, stuffing box, and strut fasteners. Trim tab and swim-platform mountings can also cause issues. Sand the aluminum lightly and clean with 70% isopropanol before covering all rivets and the seam with PC-7 for a smooth finish.

If the leak is not only loosening rivets but also electrolysis, liquid seam sealer may be needed after peining the rivets. JB Weld can be used to patch fuel tanks and sand the hole to remove any overage. After dumping the water out and letting it dry, use Marine Goop to seal the leaks. Aluminum canoes are tempered to be mallable, making them prone to greater cracks once welded.

What can I use to repair aluminum?

Welding and Cast Aluminum Repair. The one thing I haven’t mentioned is the welding process. You can use either gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or gas metal arc welding (GMAW). However, I prefer using GTAW for repairs because it provides more control in these applications.

If you were not able to remove all the oils, greases, and so forth, you might run into problems while welding. The weld might look bad or even blow out at you. If this happens, there isn’t much you can do other than to grind the weld out and try again. After one or two iterations you should be OK.

Understanding that, it is crucial that you get a bottom coating that is both flexible and has great adhesion to the sealant AND the surrounding aluminum. “Wetlander” is a perfect example. Wetlander boat coatings have excellent adhesion to both aluminum and to the sealant itself. Coating Wetlander over your seals, and over your floor and/or hull bottom, will create a double-protected waterproof seal on your leaking boat, without having to weld it shut. This makes a huge difference.

You can see in these pictures how coating over your rivets not only helps seal the rivet, but you can see how the rivet becomes less exposed, and therefore less vulnerable to catch on something and tear open. And being that Wetlander is an anti-friction coating, it further helps the boat and it’s rivets slide over surfaces, rather than scraping. So finally, to answer the “better” question,… “What is the best way to fix leaks and protect against leaks going forward?”,… I think the best answer is to apply GOOP to my leaky rivets and seams, and then overcoat all of the rivets and seals with a Wetlander coating to ensure a robust and complete leak-stopping system.

Aluminum canoes are modestly priced new and can often be found used quite cheaply—a few hundred dollars. The only repair you should need to do is some light welding if it’s sprung a slow leak over time at the rivets.

Other heavy-duty canoe materials that are durable like aluminum are fiberglass, basalt and Innegra. Some canoe makers have developed their own composites like Wenonah’s Tuf-Weave, a polyester/fiberglass combo, to add durability.

There are a couple of disadvantages of aluminum, too. The first is weight—aluminum canoes can be 70-95 pounds. That limits the ability of many people to carry one around for storage, loading and unloading on top of vehicles, and portaging.

Another disadvantage is the nature of metal and weather. If the sun is hot, your aluminum canoe will be hot to the touch. If the air temperature is chilly, your canoe will be cold. If you’re paddling and hear thunder or see lightning nearby, you’ll want to get off the water ASAP when you’re in a metal canoe since metal is an electricity conductor.

Flex Seal Liquid dries to the touch in about 2-3 hours and will fully cure in 24-48 hours.

Flexpert Tip: When patching, make sure that you extend the product well past the hole. If the gash is 2 inches wide, add another inch on either end for complete coverage.

Flex Seal Liquid bonds well with aluminum, making it an excellent option for pontoon boat repairs. Aluminum can corrode for numerous reasons causing pinholes, making pontoons susceptible to retaining water. Inspect your pontoon for any signs of corrosion or damage. Once you’ve identified trouble spots, thoroughly clean and dry the area and then seal your pontoon boat with Flex Seal Liquid.

For very large holes that need some kind of backing, use the Bondo metal self-adhesive patch (or a scrap of sheet metal glued to the backside of your hole, like we did for the front of our camper). The patch is meant to be cut to size, if needed, and is supposed to stick to the surface you’re patching. For some reason ours didn’t. Thankfully we applied ours on the inside of the camper for a smoother finish, so we used duct tape from the back to help keep the patch in place. Smoke and mirrors, y’all.
