The traditional Raingutter Regatta uses 10′ gutters with end caps attached, but vinyl gutters are better due to their ability to bend less when filled with water. In addition to using vinyl gutters, consider using a scrap piece of drainage pipe to form the raceway. This is more expensive but increases the performance of the regatta.
To build a better raingutter track, cut a triangular sail from paper, use a bendable straw for the mast, and decorate it. Level out the gutters using blocks of wood and ensure there’s a source of water.
Install the inflatable raingutter tracks from the Scout shop. These tracks take up little room when not in use and have a great deal of storage space.

Ever wonder why a sleek, powerful recreational boat is not even as fast as a typical economy car? It has to do with friction. An economy car needs a little over 100 horsepower to speed by at 100 mph, but pushing a boat through the water that fast takes several hundred horsepower. The reason is that water is almost 800 times denser than air.
Imagine standing on your dock in a 10-knot wind — it’s not hard to do. Now imagine being in a river trying to stand up to a 10-knot current. The water is so much denser that no matter how strong you are, you’d be swept away. A boat hull has to push through all that dense water while a car can slip through the air much easier.
Is acrylic paint water-based?
. Acrylic paint. The acrylic paint is water-based and it adheres extremely well so it’s durable. The 100% acrylic sticks so much that it can be applied to almost any surface. It even sticks to the painter’s fingers for several days (even when he scrubs) if he does not wear nitrile gloves.
An inconvenient is that the acrylic paint is glossier than latex. We thus prefer latex (less glossy) on particular surfaces (ceiling), while we prefer acrylic paints for exterior surfaces because it has the advantage of being more flexible, which means it can stand better Quebec changing climatic conditions.

How to make a raingutter regatta boat faster?
No matter how well you make your boat, victory demands a skilled captain. An even wind, for instance, moves the boat faster than do frantic puffs.
Practice long, steady breaths. Your breath should hit the sail directly behind the sail and just below the center.
If you’re too high, blowing downward, you will force the bow down, slowing the boat. You’ll blow your chance to win.
Position yourself so that you are blowing from behind the boat and slightly up, using a gentle, steady breath.

What paint to use on raingutter regatta?
Apply several coats of water based paint. Let dry. Apply at least two coats of acrylic gloss enamel paint. Paint mast if desired. Apply decals, etc.
Attach outriggers to hull with wood screws. Sand the two wooden outriggers to racing shape. Attach outriggers to hull with wood screws.
Center hull on outriggers. Secure with screws that are supplied in the kit. Do not press screws too hard or they will sink in the balsa wood. Use Phillips head screwdriver to attach outriggers.
How to run a raingutter regatta?
Race Rules. Two boys will race against each other at a time.
Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain gutter; the boy must hold it there with one hand.
When the starter says go, the boys will propel the boats by blowing on the sail with the straw provided.
The boy may use his hand only to upright his boat or to remove an impediment (i.e. if the boat is stuck on the gutter).
