How Much To Run A Private Yacht?

The yacht cost calculator and budgeting tool, based on data collected from over 17,000 clients, suggests that owners should expect to pay about 20% or more of the original price of their boat to run it annually. For a 10 million yacht, the cost to operate will be about 2 million. The cost of owning a yacht can vary greatly depending on factors such as size, brand, age, and amenities. On average, the real cost of owning a yacht includes taxes, insurance, mooring fees, crew, dockage fees, maintenance, capital improvement projects, outfitting costs, and more.

The average sale price for a superyacht is around 8 million, with 24 meter yachts being around 1 million or less for used superyachts. A 150-foot yacht owner is likely to spend around 860,850 a year on salaries for workers onboard. The average yearly owning costs for a yacht are roughly 10% of the purchase value based upon an 80 to 150 hour-per-year utilization.

Owners can expect to spend about 10-15% of the purchase price annually on operating and maintaining a yacht, which is 1-1.5 million a year for a 10 million yacht. The bigger the boat, the more crew and salaries you need. For a 60-foot or million-dollar yacht, the cost per year will be about 10% of its value or 100,000 per year. A super yacht typically costs from 10–15% of its purchase price to maintain, including operations.

Post-purchase, an owner should expect to pay around 20% or more of a yacht’s initial purchase price annually to keep it running. In theory, a 10 million yacht would cost around 1.6 million, with running costs being about 50-60K.

The annual maintenance costs that amount to 10% of the yacht’s purchase price, which would be around $10,000 on a $100,000 yacht.

To know what you can spend, do the math in reverse: You need to have 55% to 60% of your income available for other needs outside of your yacht. The rest is the absolute max you can blow on your obsession.

The Cheaper Way to Go Yachting. Maybe buying a superyacht just isn’t in the cards for you, but if you don’t want a smaller recreational boat, you may want to consider a bareboat charter. It’s like a lease, and just like with a car, you won’t be the owner but you can rent the yacht for a certain period of time.

This could be very short-term—for a yachting vacation—or long-term. For higher-priced vessels, splitting the costs among multiple people could make the price more reasonable. You as the charterer are responsible for nearly all fees, including fuel, boat insurance, port fees, and everything else.

Does Mark Zuckerberg have a yacht?

Mark Zuckerberg’s new yacht, Launchpad, is enjoying its summer debut. The megayacht recently stopped in Mallorca and has since ventured further into the Mediterranean. It looks like Zuckerberg may dethrone Jeff Bezos as king of this year’s superyacht season.

While the Amazon founder made waves last year with the debut of his megayacht Koru, Zuckerberg is the name on the yacht world’s lips this season.

By May, the transaction seemed all but confirmed when both the yacht and Zuckerberg made their way to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday with a fete that included a few spins on his infamous hydrofoil.

Now that summer is here, Zuckerberg has debuted Launchpad —and her support superyacht Wingman — on the biggest stage in the yachting world: the Mediterranean.

Can a yacht be a good investment?

Longevity. Luxury yachts can provide an extremely rewarding return on investment when purchased at a reasonable price and well maintained over time. Luxury yachts in particular often hold their value very well. It’s not uncommon for luxury yachts to go up steeply in value, especially if they’ve been well kept and improved on.

There’s a fantastic market for used yachts, particularly in the luxury yacht charter Miami market. Companies that charter yachts are always looking to add inventory to their fleets, and after years of use, you can potentially make good money selling yours, whether you want to buy a newer one or not.

Fun. That’s right, fun! An investment doesn’t just have to be about ROI or hedging inflation. It can also be about having fun and enjoying your purchase. Buying a yacht is one of the most fun things you can do with your money. You get to use it as often as you want for years and years of relaxing at sea. When it’s not in use, you can rent it out or charter it to others who will love using it as much as you have.

Do millionaires own yachts?

Superyachts have become the go-to status symbol for the ultra wealthy, providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are – even more so than property – the single most expensive asset you can own.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, have gone even bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked out with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs and cinemas.

A look at these superyachts – broadly defined as over 80-feet-long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures – offers a glimpse into how the 0.00001 per cent live. It’s something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of US$1 million.

Here are nine of the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

How much did Bill Gates pay for his yacht?

$25 million The initial report claimed that the megayacht came with an impressive asking of €600 million (approximately $646.2 million at the current exchange rate). Separately, Gates was also selling his much smaller shadow superyacht, the Wayfinder shadowcat he’d bought in 2021 for a more modest $25 million.

To be or not to be (a megayacht owner), that is the real question. Prince Hamlet might have been tormented about life’s hardships and the right approach to them, but the biggest question of the day is a $600+ million one: why did the billionaire change his mind about owning a megayacht?

Back in 2019, word got out online that Bill Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s most high-profile activists, had bought himself a hydrogen-powered megayacht called Aqua, which came with an estimated price tag of $600 million. This kind of money is an insane amount today as much as it was back then, but the most shocking bit about the rumor was the fact that the purchase was not in line with Gates’ image as an environmentalist.

Some months later, Sinot Yacht & Architecture Design, which had created the Aqua concept as a showcase for the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show, put out a statement to deny the acquisition. Aqua was not a yacht to sell, but a concept looking into more sustainable propulsion for privately owned vessels.

What is the average net worth of yacht owners?

On average, luxury yacht owners have a net worth of US$510 million, according to Wealth-X.

Are the rich buying yachts?

Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.
