How Frequently May Collegiate Basketball Teams Travel Abroad?

College basketball programs have been taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows teams to make international trips once every four years. This allows them to play games abroad, and this has led to a strong demand for travel among women’s college basketball teams. At least 58 Division I teams will take foreign tours this summer, up from at least 18 in 2022. The NCAA allows teams to take trips such as these every four years, and BYU has capitalized on this opportunity.

The 2019-2020 season is about to start, and teams are allowed no more than 10 practices prior to the foreign tour and are limited to a maximum of 10 games, which cannot be against other US teams. College basketball teams are allowed to travel internationally during the summer once every four years. More important than the games, which have wildly varying degrees of competition, college basketball teams can get a jump on the season with summer foreign tours.

The NCAA rules permit teams to take foreign tours once every four years, meaning that every four-year player in a program will get to experience a foreign tour at least once. 59 women’s teams and 96 men’s squads took international trips, spending a total of more than four years outside the country.

The COVID-19 pandemic canceled all tours in 2020, deterring most teams from taking advantage of this rule. However, once every four years, a program can schedule a trip abroad to play exhibition games against foreign teams. Schools are allowed to do an offseason trip once every four years, and most schools will take advantage of this opportunity.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
