In this video, David and Janek share their tips for getting good at big air kitesurfing super fast. They emphasize the importance of building up speed and moving your body away from the downwind line while pulling the bar to jump up to 40 feet. To achieve big airs, keep the kite fully powered between 10 and 11 oclock (more or less 45 degrees) and reach medium-to-high speed.
The best big air kites are those that travel faster through the window, allow the rider to edge harder, travel up higher with the least effort, have the most hang time, and float down the smoothest. Hybrid kites with large kites do not necessarily mean big airs. To get big airs, build up speed nicely and move your body away from the downwind line while pulling the bar. Ride with seat harnesses in 15-knot plus winds and find small water ramps that will help boost air time.
To avoid getting stuck in low rotations based on your pop, start with low rotations based on your pop and not on the pull of your kite. Remember to hold your front when jumping, as nobody is getting big air in those kinds of winds.
A foil board or large directional can save trying to get air for better days. The next tip from Shaun is to learn how to not dump any power by spit the bar with your fingers and try to hold the kite in one place. In their 6 years of kitesurfing, they have learned that trying hard isn’t always the best way to achieve extraordinary heights.
