King Juan Carlos of Spain has renounced the use of his royal yacht, the 41.5m ultrafast motor yacht Fortuna. The luxurious vessel, built in 2000 as the royal yacht for the King of Spain, has a maximum speed of 65 knots and a highly sophisticated propulsion system with three Rolls Royce engines. The yacht, which was formerly known as Fortuna, was custom-made by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Bazan.
The King of Spain has claimed an impressive victory in the six-metre class at the World Sailing Championships on the Isle of Wight. The move comes as Spain suffers under bitter austerity measures. With a total horse power of 22,660hp, Foners can reach a top speed of 70 knots (129 kmh).
The Royal Yacht Izar, delivered in 2000, was crowned the world’s fastest superyacht, reaching 68 knots. The yacht has a bulletproof exterior, measures 136ft, weighs 140 tonnes, and has a 20,000 horsepower engine. It also features three turbines.
The 10 fastest superyachts in the world, with speeds ranging up to 70 knots, include the King’s first vessel, Fortunita, an 8.9-meter Dragon-class competition sailing boat used at the 1972 Games. The Royal Yacht Izar, also known as MY Foners (ex: MY Fortuna), was launched in 2000 by Izar as the King of Spain’s royal yacht.
