How Fast Are The New America’S Cup Yachts?

The American Magics Patriot, a challenger of the record Luna Rossa, registered a top speed of 53.3 knots during their final race before being knocked out of the competition. The 50-knot barrier used to be the preserve of extreme speed record craft and kiteboarders. A World Speed Sailing Record was set in 2009 of 51.36 knots. As the Louis Vuitton 37th Americas Cup nears, the intensity ramps up, with four teams revealing their box-fresh AC75s.

The AC75 design, a radical 75ft long monohull with no keel that flies on foils at speeds of up to 50 knots, is being used by Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) as the class for the next Americas Cup. The boats will be a step up from what was seen in Challenger yacht Luna Rossa, which had maxed out at 53.4 knots (99 kph). Team New Zealand’s Te Rehutai is rumored to be even faster than the Challenger yacht Luna Rossa.

A 5 minute reference was taken on port upwind before tacking to starboard and sailing on the new tubercle foil for 10 minutes. The recon ribs top speed was a fraction over 43 knots, but the top speed was a fraction over 43 knots. Typical racing speeds are over 30 knots, with the boats capable of sailing well over 40 knots in the right conditions.

The American Magic AC75 has arrived in Barcelona but is not expected to make an exciting comeback.
