How Far Forward To Mount Wakeboard Tower?

Positioning a wakeboard tower depends on whether it is a forward arching or aft facing tower. Most wakeboard towers are installed to flow with the windshield lines and avoid obstructions behind drilling holes. Loosely bolt the rear legs to the top section, applying anti-seize compound to prevent galling. The ideal height for a wakeboarder’s tow line is about six to eight feet above the deck height on your boat.

Drill an 18″ hole first as a pilot hole, then follow up with the larger drill bit. Chamfer the edge to a 45-degree angle with a small round. To make the job easier, move the tower top from the base bar and assemble the base bars with the MOUNT SET.

To fold the tower, disconnect the Quick Release knob of each rear legs from the deck mount and press the tower back towards the stern. The placement of the tower is completely up to personal preferences, with the most popular place being somewhere mid-ship, often straddling the windshield. However, farther forward or aft mountings work equally well.

The standard positioning of a wakeboard tower is about 3-5 inches forward between the bottom mount and the top bar. Forward facing towers are less stable but provide better access to board racks. Front swooping towers mount back a lot further on the hull, making the boat more accessible for loading people and gear.

Fenders, lines, and other accessories can be mounted further forward on the hull, making the boat more accessible for loading people and gear.

Is it okay to pull a tube from a wakeboard tower?

While it may be tempting to use your wakeboard tower to pull a tube, it’s important to prioritize safety and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Pulling a tube with a wakeboard tower can compromise stability, safety, structural integrity, maneuverability, and even warranty coverage. Instead, invest in a proper tow bar or harness specifically designed for towing tubes. This will ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone on board.

Is it harder to wakeboard without a tower?

You may be wondering if you even need a wakeboard tower. No, you don’t need a wakeboard tower to wakeboard—but it’s much more fun with one! It’s very simple. Towers allow you to achieve more hang time when you are doing tricks while you are wakeboarding. You can jump higher on your wakeboard and enjoy more time in the air for awesome tricks when you have a wakeboard tower. Sounds pretty cool, but how does a wakeboard tower achieve this?

Wakeboard Towers Have a Higher Tie-Off Point. Without a wakeboard tower, your rope is most likely tied to the back of the boat at a point that is fairly close to the water. This kind of low tie-off point has the effect of constantly pulling you downward—when you jump, the rope is at a downward angle and pulls you back down almost immediately. The rope can also get caught in the turbulence behind the boat, making it harder to get up on the wakeboard and do tricks.

A wakeboard tower solves the problem of a low tow point by raising the tie-off point. With a higher tow line, you can jump higher with more freedom to do tricks and flips, and the rope will be well above the water so it doesn’t get caught in turbulence. A higher tow point also helps you get up on your wakeboard much easier. While it is possible to wakeboard without a tower, we highly recommend adding one to get the air you’re looking for when performing tricks.

Waketower Pro was started in Fall of 2009 to fill a much needed niche in the marine world. With the ever growing popularity of wakeboarding, we felt this was the right time to start this venture. We did not know at the time the response would be so great. As we were unsure about the true needs of the industry, we took the gamble to venture out and put the service out there. We quickly realized the need for our services was greater than expected.

Our first summer on the road in 2010 was a great year. We met some incredible people, worked on some great boats, and put smiles on owners. We travelled through 6 states that year. The next season was even better. We anticipated having a great year, but it was terrific. We travelled over 17 states installing towers and accessories.

To date, we have traveled over 38 states providing wakeboard tower installation services.

Where to mount a tower on a boat?

2. Position the TopHave someone hold the top section while you position the rear mounting bases along the gunwale, knowing that these will need to be at least 48 inches aft of the front bases. Use a tape measure to place the tow point in the middle of the boat with the top bar parallel to deck. Also make sure the tower will fold down in a convenient spot. The bases should be exactly opposite each other. To mark them, draw an outline around each base when the top is in the correct position.

3. Mount the RearBases Use the aft bases as templates to mark the two mounting holes. Check for obstructions and then drill the holes. Use 1/4-inch aluminum plate or ¾-inch plywood for a backing plate (Monster recommends using a plate that spans both the front and rear bases); then install the bases with the supplied hardware, rubber pads and factory backing plates, applying sealant to the mounting holes. Ask a buddy to help tighten the locknuts from inside the boat.

4. Attach the FrontLegs Loosely bolt the front legs to the top, using the supplied Teflon washers in the joints between the top and legs. Also install the front mounting bases to the bottoms of the front legs, making sure the larger portion of the base bottom is forward. The front bases attach to the front legs with bolts and nuts that have hand knobs, so you do not need any tools to secure these. For this step, attach them loosely, because you will remove them to install the bases.

Planned Activities. Before you purchase a wakeboard tower, you should consider what you plan on using it for. If you want to get into wakeboarding, kneeboarding, water surfing, or almost any other kind of water sport, you need a wakeboard tower. Although towers aren’t required to do these sports, the height of a tower raises your tow point and provides more air when compared to a low tow point. The more air a rider can get, the higher and easier he or she can jump when doing tricks. Many people also use wakeboard towers to hang lights for greater safety and visibility. If you plan on spending time with family and friends on your boat, you might want to mount speakers so you can listen to music, and you can add a bimini for some shade. Racks can also mount to your wakeboard tower and be used to store all kinds of equipment, such as wakeboards or water skis. People can also use the wakeboard tower to support themselves as they move on the boat.

Matching The Style of Your Boat. Something that may not have crossed your mind when you are looking for a wakeboard tower is style. You want your wakeboard tower to complement your boat. If you have a stylish boat with lots of curves, you will probably want a tower with curved legs and a modern appearance. If your boat is more traditional than sporty, you should get a more traditional wakeboard tower. Wakeboard towers can come in a variety of colors, so if there is a signature color on your boat, you could match your tower to that color. By adding a wakeboard tower to your boat, you are also increasing the resale value of your boat. You will have upgraded your boat by adding a great accessory that adds a ton of value.

DIY vs. Professional Installation. Once you purchase your wakeboard tower, you will need to install it. Many of our customers install their own wakeboard towers, but you could also hire a professional to do it for you. There are many reasons why you might want to install the tower yourself. We provide instructions for how to install our wakeboard towers, and they are designed to be easy to install. If you have any trouble while you are trying to install your tower, we offer phone and email support. Usually, self-installation can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. You may not want to install it yourself because of the time commitment or because the task seems daunting. We understand if you’d rather hire someone else to install your tower for you. You will have to spend a little extra money, but you might feel better knowing the job is done right.

How far behind the boat should you wakeboard?

If you were to look at your wake from above, you’d notice that it fans out from the back of your boat like a ‘V’. The further you are away from the boat, the further you have to jump in order to clear the wake. Likewise, the closer you are to the back of the boat, the easier time you’ll have clearing the wake. Rope lengths for beginners are usually about 65 feet, for intermediate riders typically 65-75 feet (the longer you can manage, the better), and for advanced riders generally a rope 75-85 feet in length.

The general rule of jumping is that you want to be landing most of your tricks right on the downside of the second wake. Landing past that every time (called landing in ‘the flats’) will take its toll on your knees and likely cause you to bounce when you hit the water. Just like watching a snowboarder or motocross rider, you’ll notice that they land on a downhill transition every time. If they were to land flat, they’d either bounce when they landed or their knees would buckle. Use the rope length to help you ensure that you’re always landing on the nice, gentle, downside of the wake.

With wakeboarding you can use rope length to your advantage if you’re looking to “cheat” on new tricks. If you’re landing in the flats every time, let the rope out a length. If you’re coming up short, pull it in a few feet. When teaching people how to jump the wake on the more difficult toe-side, pull the rope in 5-10 feet to shorten the jump and help them learn. The same strategy can be used to help someone who’s constantly coming up just shy of clearing the wake – pull the rope in and see if it helps.
