A week ago, two of the most massive cruise ships docked near my city. These massive vessels, with their towering size and thousands of passengers, managed to stay upright and stable in the water. Cruise ships do not tip over due to the principle of buoyancy, which states that the mass is equal to the weight. The hull of a cruise ship is designed with a displacement hull, ensuring that the vessel displaces an amount of water equal to its weight, creating necessary buoyancy. The design includes a deep bottom and a submerged portion, maximizing stability.

There are two ways ships can stay upright: keeping the center-of-gravity (CG) lower than in sailing yachts and old trawlers, or by making the upper section lighter. Buoys operate under this principle, making the upper section lighter and naturally staying upright in the water. Cruise ships can stay above the water as long as they can displace an equal amount of water to their mass. Balancing and maintaining a low center of gravity are key to cruise ship stability. When the ship is in an upright position, the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy are aligned vertically above one another.

Can large cruise ships capsize?

A large cruise ship can sink at any time, when buoyancy is lost or the ship capsizes due to an accident that allows water into the into the hull or loss of ballast in sufficient quantity. It doesn’t matter is there is a hurricane raging or the sea is glassy calm if there is loss of buoyancy.

How do you escape a sinking cruise ship?

  • If there are no lifeboats available, try to find a life preserver ring or similar flotation device and toss it into the water. Any flotation device is better than none, although your survival chances decrease dramatically once you’re forced to spend time in the water.
  • You may need to jump off the ship, or in some cases, simply step off an incline. If there is a lifeboat nearby, swim to it, wave your arms, and shout to attract attention.
  • If jumping, always look first. There may be people, boats, fires, propellers, etc., in the water below that you could hit or be submerged in. The ideal scenario is getting straight into a lifeboat. If not, the next best scenario is to jump as close to a rescue boat as possible and make your way into it immediately.

Follow directions, and wait for the rescue. Waiting alone in the open ocean without the comfort of a large ship will undoubtedly be frightening, but be patient. Help is on the way.

  • In a lifeboat, use rations sparingly. Use flares only when it is clear that doing so will result in a rescuer seeing you. Huddle together to keep warm. Arrange lookout watches. Collect rainwater and don’t drink seawater or urine. Treat any injuries as best you can.
  • Stay determined. Stories of survivors at sea are a testament that it is the most determined who survive harsh waiting conditions leading up to rescue.
  • If you couldn’t find a lifeboat, look for the next best things, such as a life raft, or bobbing objects from the ship (flotsam) that remain afloat.

How can ships be so heavy and still float?

The answer to why ships can float comes from the famous principle of Archimedes which says that the net upward force on an object immersed in water is equal to the weight of the water displaced by the object. If a large object like a ship is lowered slowly into water, it will displace more and more water until the weight of water displaced equals the weight of the ship, at which point it will stop dropping and “float”. If, of course, the ship is too heavy (say it was filled with too much steel or other heavy stuff) then the weight of water displaced will never equal the ship’s weight and it will never float (it will sink like a stone).

To give passengers peace of mind, the Cruise Lines International Association assured that ships are constantly checked and inspected by various parties, including the International Maritime Organization and port authorities, to guarantee that safety regulations are consistently followed. As a result, the organization declared that cruise ships are “one of the safest ways to travel” and are “safer than virtually every other form of travel.”

How do massive cruise ships stay upright?

The reason that large cruise ships carrying hundreds of thousands of tonnes can float on water is largely down to physics. Put simply, cruise ships float because their mass is low in relation to the volume of water they’re sailing on. This creates an effect called buoyancy, which keeps the ship upright and afloat.

Cruise ships must be able to withstand the weight of the ship, the crew, luggage, supplies and passengers. This mass can total anywhere upwards of 65,000 tonnes. While this might seem like a lot, it’s nothing compared to the mass of water in the world. Cruise ships can displace the equivalent amount of water to their mass when they put pressure on the ocean, which pushes the ship upwards.

To keep afloat, the cruise ship must be able to displace its weight in water before being submerged. That’s a lot easier to do if the cruise ship is constructed in a way so that it’s less dense than the water below it. So how do cruise ship engineers achieve buoyancy during construction? The solution is simple – they choose lightweight, sturdy materials and disperse the weight of the ship across the hull, which we’ll explain in more detail later.
