Jet skis can operate in shallower water due to their lack of props, but it is crucial to ensure safety when operating the engine in water less than 3 feet deep. If you want to beach your jet ski, it is essential to shut down the engine from a decent distance. A jet ski can safely run in about 3 feet with the engine on, but if riders go any deeper than 3 feet, they should anchor their jet ski in shallow waters.
To anchor a jet ski in shallow waters, choose a suitable anchor such as a Fluke or mushroom anchor for stability in deeper waters. Have run aground once, sucked some mud but I shut it down quick with no problem. Why is my jet ski full of water?
Should you find any significant amount of water in the engine compartment and it hasn’t rained and you haven’t been out riding, take the craft to the dealer for inspection and maintenance to make sure there are no leaking cooling lines, loose hose clamp fittings or unforeseen damage.
Taking care of your craft while in storage, covering it to ward off rainwater, and avoiding extreme riding behavior when underway will go a long way toward eliminating water intrusion…and keep that water outside the hull, where it belongs.

How Shallow Can a Jet Ski Run?. How shallow can a jet ski run? Contrary to popular belief, jet skis aren’t designed to run in shallow water. This is because their pumps are prone to sucking up objects from the bottom like rocks, sand, or trash. Because of this concern, manufacturers recommend that you not operate a jet ski in water shallower than 3 feet.
As jet skis don’t have props like boats, they can run in shallower water of course. But keeping safety in mind, you should never operate the engine in water that is less than 3 feet deep.
You have to be especially careful if you want to beach your jet ski, as you have to shut the engine down from a decent distance (of at least 50 feet) before the shoreline. Don’t worry, as you can still reach the shoreline with the help of momentum!

- Operator Skill: A skilled and experienced rider who understands how to handle a PWC is less likely to flip it. Knowing how to maneuver, maintain balance, and react to waves or obstacles can significantly reduce the chances of flipping.
- Water Conditions: Rough or choppy waters, strong waves, wakes from other boats, or sudden changes in water conditions can increase the likelihood of a PWC flipping.
- Speed and Maneuvers: High speeds and abrupt maneuvers, especially in combination with challenging water conditions may destabilize the craft and increase the risk of flipping.
- Weight Distribution: How weight is distributed on a PWC can affect its stability. Having multiple riders or improperly distributing weight can make the craft more prone to flipping.
Is it easy to capsize a jet ski?
As odd as it may seem, riding at low speeds, or while stopped, especially with multiple riders can cause a PWC to capsize. These boats run on a jet propulsion system, and constant, steady speed is necessary to maintain stability. If too much weight is carried on top of the PWC, it becomes top-heavy, also making it much easier to roll over. Different models are built to carry different numbers of passengers, and seating is also linked to weight allowances. Always check your manual to determine how many riders it can safely accommodate. When riding with passengers, especially if they’re not skilled riders, it’s a good idea to try to practice working in sync together when you start.
Falling off your PWC is a common occurrence in the sport, but luckily getting back on is as easy as swimming to the back of the craft and hoisting yourself back in…except that it’s not always as easy as it sounds and it is possible to capsize your PWC while trying to reboard. Attempting to reboard your ski from the side and not the back deck can cause it to flip over. PWC are designed to be boarded from the back and do not have the stability for side boarding, especially in deep water, so keep that in mind if you end up in the water.
Can a Jet Ski Sink?. Whether you were riding a little too aggressively or encountered unexpected water conditions, if you end up in the water with your PWC overturned, you may wonder if your boat can sink. The short answer is yes, it could sink, but it’s not a common occurrence. PWC are designed to be buoyant, and most models have built-in flotation devices in the bilge that prevent them from sinking completely. The back heavier end where the engine is will sink down, but the front should stay afloat. However, if your ski is damaged or completely flooded with water, it could potentially sink.

A low-hour ski is a machine that has been used for less than 50 hours, while 150 hours or more of use is considered high. If a PWC is 5 years old, you should expect it to have roughly 150 hours logged.
When you get a new PWC, you break the engine in for the first 5 hours, then you get your first service done around 10 to 50 hours. From that point, you’ll get it serviced every 25 to 50 hours or once a year if you don’t reach those numbers. Specific components like a supercharger need servicing every 100 or 200 hours. Modern machines have service timers built in just like cars and the owner’s manual will tell you what needs to be done at certain hours.
