Americans need a valid U.S. passport and an Australia visa or travel authorization to enter Australia as a U.S. citizen. The most convenient option for short-term stays is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). While most U.S. citizens who travel to Australia with a visa or visa-waiver are admitted without incident, Australian authorities have the right to deny entry.
For holiday visits, U.S. citizens need an Australian tourist visa (also known as “Australian vacation visa”). An ETA is required for all visitors, regardless of nationality. eTA to Australia (visa subclass 601) allows visitors to visit Australia for leisure, business, or transit purposes. As a multiple-entry visa, it allows entering the country numerous times.
There is no VISA-FREE access to Australia, so everyone must hold either an ETA, eVisitor, or Visitor visa. ETA is available to 33 nationalities and costs 20 AUD. Visa and citizenship applications are managed by the Department of Home Affairs, and embassy staff cannot assist with general visa or citizenship enquiries.
People entering Australia do not need to complete the Digital Passenger Declaration or Maritime Travel Declaration. People leaving Australia will not be asked to provide any documents.
U.S. citizens must apply for a valid Australian visa, which can be done online or directly with the Australian Government. There are several types of visitor visas to consider, including the Australia ETA (Tourist Visa Australia), which is valid for up to one year and allows visitors to visit Australia for leisure, business, or transit purposes.
With the exception of New Zealand passport holders, U.S. citizens traveling to Australia must have a valid visa, depending on their travel purpose and stay duration.

SmartGate kiosks are available at participating airports and there is no additional enrollment process or fee. Visit the SmartGate website for more information and a list of participating airports in Australia.
