Mauritius, a beautiful island with an extensive lagoon and abundant marine life, is an ideal destination for snorkelers of all experience levels. Despite signs of declining reef health, the island’s shore waters offer opportunities to observe colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and dolphins. Most snorkeling spots in Mauritius lie within calm lagoons surrounding the island, but some beaches also offer accessible snorkeling opportunities.
During windy months (November to March), the east and south coasts have slightly less sea visibility, but the rest of the island remains perfect for snorkeling. Mauritius is the perfect destination for beginners as there are many shallow areas to enjoy. The Maldives is still the better bet for snorkeling, but Mauritius offers great scope for snorkeling due to its clear water and shallow depth areas suitable for swimming.
Scuba diving is not necessary to enjoy and explore the underwater world in Mauritius, as the coral reefs make it safe to swim. Mauritius has many options for snorkeling, with most taking place in the Southeast or West of the island. The east has good underwater visibility, and many beach areas now have safe swimming spaces.
In summary, Mauritius offers a variety of snorkeling spots, including Cerf Island, Blue Bay, and Grand Baie, with clear waters and safe swimming areas. However, it is not a top snorkeling destination due to crowds and resort-type holidays.
