Is it profitable to charter your yacht?

Is Owning a Yacht for Charter Profitable?. Yes, owning a yacht for charter can be profitable but owning a yacht will rarely “pay for itself.” Chartering your yacht presents some unique benefits that can lead to opportunities to make a profit off of your investment in a myriad of ways, including offsetting the cost of owning a yacht, selling your yacht for a profit, and even making a profit (if you’re among the lucky few who have the know-how and the right vessel).

Offsetting the Costs of Owning a Yacht. Chartering out your personal yacht to offset ownership costs.. One of the greatest benefits of chartering your yacht is making some money from your investment when you’re not using it. It’s a simple way to offset the cost of something that would otherwise sit and cost money. It also gives you more to work with as far as keeping the yacht up to date.

Keep in mind, the service and maintenance of a yacht is expensive but also a primary factor in whether or not your yacht will continue to retain value or even exceed value. Since routine refittings and redesigns are often unavoidable and cost up to 10 percent of your yacht’s value each year, this option offers you the added benefit of maximizing profits as well as your enjoyment each time you decide to set sail on another vacation.

Can I travel to another country on my own boat?

It is important to be aware that regulations may “kick-in” before you even enter Territorial Waters. Some countries require you to notify your intentions to the authorities by VHF before you proceed to a designated port of entry. You may need to have arranged a visa in advance and you may have to buy a permit for the boat. An inventory of the items onboard may be needed, as may a crew list. It may be necessary to present the passports and ships papers in every port you visit, just at the ports of entry and departure or only if requested.

Even in countries where yacht tourism is commonplace, the rules for yachts can be difficult to establish. For the less frequented countries, someone who has been there before can be an invaluable source of information and may be able to offer contacts within the country to help with customs and immigration procedures, either informally with translating or as a formal agent, which can be required.

Knowledge. There are numerous cruising forums and websites which offer information and can be used to make contact with other cruisers, to allow you to build a picture of what may be expected before your arrival. Some of these are detailed under “Related Links”. If you find other ones to be particularly useful, please email us so we can spread the word.

Who is the CEO of Horizon yachts?

Soon after the Horizon Group was founded in 1987, Taiwan’s prospering yachting industry experienced an unexpected recession. Undeterred, Horizon’s founder and CEO John Lu made critical decisions over the next decade that served to keep this builder at the forefront of the very competitive yacht building industry. In 1989, Horizon shifted its business strategy to target the European, Australian and Asian markets. The company then redeveloped its yacht construction process, voluntarily complying with the stringent quality and safety requirements set by Europe and Japan. As a result, Horizon quickly earned a distinct reputation for building yachts of exceptional quality and value compared to its European counterpart.

In 1993, Lu capitalized on the increasing demand for quality megayachts at a competitive price and made the critical decision to begin building yachts over 80 feet. When the shipyard encountered limits on the production scale, Lu focused on increasing the yard’s capacity through implementing specialized processes and improving overall product quality.

Over the years Horizon continued to expand, securing a position as the leading Asian yacht brand in the luxury megayacht market. Between 2000 and 2005, Lu focused the company’s attention on building a comprehensive range of yachts while assigning a build concentration to each of Horizon’s four subsidiaries under the Horizon Group umbrella: Horizon shipyard, Vision shipyard, Premier shipyard and Atech Composites.

Are yacht charter rates negotiable?

Can dates influence the charter fee?. The charter fee may also fluctuate depending on the period of your yacht rental. Some yachts have high and low season rates. Obviously, the charter fee tends to be higher and less negotiable in the summer peak season as there is much more demand. Chartering outside peak season can be very interesting, with a near-perfect weather and far less crowds. The months of May, June, September and October offer fantastic cruising conditions in the south of France.

What is included in the charter fee?. The charter fee includes in particular the use of the yacht, with all her equipment in working order, and the employment of her crew.

How is the charter fee calculated?. Charter fees are set per week. However, ayacht rental can last for any duration under or over 7 days – in the summer note that some Owners do not accept charters of less than 7 days. Charters of less than 7 days are calculated pro-rata against the weekly charter fee divided by 6 and multiplied by the number of days. Charters over 7 days are calculated pro-rata against the weekly charter fee divided by 7 and multiplied by the number of days.

What do I need to charter a boat in Europe?

International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) is mandatory when chartering in most European / Mediterranean waters. The American Sailing Association (ASA) is also proud to offer the possibility to obtain the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) for sailors available in the United States.

This is a common question yacht charter brokers receive regularly. When considering a charter in the Mediterranean, it’s crucial to possess a sailing certification/license (and in some instances, like Croatia and Montenegro, a VHF license). While not all charter companies will insist on seeing your sailing resume, they will undoubtedly inquire about your sailing license.

Certain countries like Croatia and Spain have a list of licenses they recognise, listed by the charterer’s country of origin.

If you have chartered in the Caribbean, you will know that you only need a sailing resume to charter, but this is not the case in the Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain, and other European countries…
