Do Pirates Go After Cruise Ships?

The Cruise Passenger publication reports that there have been only six reported pirate attacks on cruise ships over the last decade, with no successful attacks. However, cruise ships are prepared for the worst, as pirates have been known to attack and hijack them to steal cargo or ransom passengers onboard.

Cruise ships have implemented various security measures to enhance safety when sailing through pirate-prone waters. These measures include outer deck restrictions, which have been in place for over a decade. The most recent incident occurred more than four years ago.

Pirates target vulnerable vessels, such as oil tankers and container ships, as they have thousands of people working on them at any time. Cruise ships do not want to be in areas with pirates, so states that cater to cruise tourists get rid of pirates. In the past decade, there have been only six reported incidents of pirate attacks on cruise ships, and the most recent was more than four years ago.

Despite ongoing concerns about pirate attacks, cruise ships employ proactive safety measures and advanced technologies to ensure passengers’ peace of mind. There is no specific law that cruise lines must follow to ensure the safety of their passengers from pirate attacks. However, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has stated that years ago, a terrorist group boarded and killed a passenger on a cruise ship called the Achille Laura.

In conclusion, cruise ships are equipped to protect against pirates and ensure passenger safety while enjoying their vacation. By implementing proactive safety measures and advanced technologies, cruise ships can provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for passengers.
